PL_ Veteran Posted June 13, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 13, 2008 Use Ubuntu. I don't know much about the Eee but if you have an external disc drive plug it in via USB and boot into a copy and install (think you can boot from flash drive though) Trust me, Ubuntu is the easiest one out there. Berserk87
what problems did you have installing fedora? if you want to just give up on fedora, ubuntu is the most popular distro i believe....at least around here it is.

Yeh ok but from what ive read i have to jump hoops to get hardware working such as the webcam, function keys, wireless, wired network, pretty much everything which is what im currently experiencing with fedora
zhangm Supervisor Posted June 13, 2008 Supervisor Share Posted June 13, 2008 Just install Ubuntu or Xubuntu. Get the core OS on there, then come back with specific questions about the things that aren't working.

I read a review on Puppeee and it sounds really easy but i want to know whether i can put compiz on it and make it look kick ass. markwolfe Veteran Posted June 13, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 13, 2008 Yeh ok but from what ive read i have to jump hoops to get hardware working such as the webcam, function keys, wireless, wired network, pretty much everything which is what im currently experiencing with fedora It sounds like you think that Ubuntu is a completely different product than Fedora. :ermm: They are both Linux. They both have the Linux kernel. They both run the GNU OS. They both have selected GNOME as the default desktop. The both support the same hardware. They both run the same apps. I don't know what you expect to be so radically different. Essentially, the purpose of a distro is to have a starting point for your install. You can add in anything else after the fact, but the first install will detect hardware (some variances in success here as differing default setups may be more successful on some hardware than others). Most of the performance differences are gained by selecting a lighter Window Manager (fluxbox over Gnome + compiz, for example) and lighter apps (sylpheed over evolution), not by picking Ubuntu over Fedora over SUSE. For example, Puppy Linux uses Fluxbox by default, so will not have compiz-based 3D effects. Heck, fluxbox doesn't even have desktop icons by default. ;)

1759
I can't even get Compiz to run well on a newer laptop, using an ATI chip (or maybe it's because of it). But I would definitely try Ubuntu, or the new netbook version they have coming out soon.

Borbus
Try following this guide from beginning to end:https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC Yes, do not just create a normal Ubuntu install on the eeePC or you will reduce the life of your flash drive. Make sure you use ext2 (not ext3) and no swap.
bloodrain
the eee pc is a bargain bottom basement computer. expecting alot out of it is just insane.
Shadow Dragon
You wont get many music and movies on an eeepc o.O Ever heard of SD cards? They go all the way up to 32 GB now and 16 GB cards are dirt cheap. Plus his doesn't seem to be a 701 (the 4G). you want a smooth running compiz desktop on a eeepc filled wit pron, movies and music? I want some of the stuff you have been smokingThe Eee can easily run Compiz. I'm guessing you don't have one yourself to try it out (like I do) so I suggest you try to do a youtube search, I'm sure you'll find something to prove my point.Yes, do not just create a normal Ubuntu install on the eeePC or you will reduce the life of your flash drive. I basically do everything on it except stuff that requires a large screen, I use my desktop for that, although one could use the VGA-out which works perfectly. The only thing you can't do is CPU og graphics intensive work, which basically means that Quake 3 and Halo may run fine but you can't play something like HL2. b0zm4g
Ive installed Ubuntu and so far so good, fixing up all the little hardware mods where they dont work. Im fixing the mic now but it says do this: Edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and add the line “options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig” How do i do that? Edit: Is there a chance anyone using msn messenger could message me there email to help me through this. Ive realised the rest of the fixes other than getting wireless to work are fairly difficult, well maybe not difficult i just dont understand it. I still have 5 things to fix. lol might be a big ask but if anyone could it would help alot. Edited June 16, 2008 by b0zm4g

Anibal P
Just use the Linux distro it comes with? There's a guide somewhere to make it look like a traditional Linux Desktop and you really don't have to muck around too much to get it working, took like 3 minutes to get it working on my Mom's Eee
