Brian M. Veteran Posted June 22, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 22, 2008 http://project.shiftlinux.net Logging In To log in to the new Project Management System, use the above URL. It will ask you for your Neowin username and password (as always, when using the Neowin External Login Tool, please ensure that the URL in the address bar begins with https://www.neowin.net). The first time you login, the system will create an account for you, and will put you into the correct group (shift developers that are not in a Staff group will have their permissions bumped manually): Neowin Staff are added to the Shift Linux group, which has full permissions and admin access. Members are added to the Members group, which has permission to view public items (i.e. all items not tagged as Private), comment on public items, and mark public tasks as complete (i.e. giving them a chance to help out). In the system, Staff and Developers are known as "In the company", whilst members are known as "Clients" - this is just down to the way the program had been written. Please note that you will receive an error message when logging out, due to the way in which it uses the NELT. It does indeed log you out, and I'm currently looking into it (I thought that it was better to get it out rather than wait while I hunt for the error). It should be fixed in the next update. Projects Projects are the overall groups into which everything is placed. As it stands, there is only one project, Shift. Extra projects can be created (such as Shift:lite, etc), however, projects cannot be deleted (for safety reasons, they can only be deleted directly from the database). Different projects stay completely separate from each other. Tasks Tasks are pretty self explanatory - they allow you to set tasks to be completed. You can set tasks into a specific completion order, assign them to specific people (or groups of people) and comment on them. Task Lists Task Lists compile several tasks together into one batch. Like tasks, they can be assigned to groups of people, or individuals. Milestones The milestones area allows you to set specific dates for groups of tasks to be completed. For example, if we wanted a release date of July 24th for RC1, and RC1 required Tasks A, B and C, you can assign them to a milestone. Think of Milestones as deadlines - the system will remind you of any upcoming/late milestones. Files The files area allows you to upload and comment on files. It also contains a mini-subversion clone, which allows you to upload several revisions of files. So, for example, you could upload and original logo.png, receive comments, revise it, and so on. You can also separate files into folders, to organise things slightly better. If you want to compress files before uploading, please use either .tar.gz or .zip archives, that way everyone can open them. "Private" Box When you add anything to the system, there is a box that is labeled "Private". If this is checked, that item can only be seen by staff and developers - members cannot see or access it. RSS and iCalendar When logged in, you will see an RSS feed icon, and a link to iCalendar. You can keep track of the project using either of these (using an RSS reader, or your favourite calendar application that supports ICS files). Right, I think that covers the basics - however, it'd probably be best if you spent a minute or so looking around (once you know where everything is, it's a pretty easy system). Could I ask that everyone in the team logs into it as soon as possible, so we have accounts listed for everyone. That way, we can sort out permissions and tasks for everyone. Oh, and finally, a note to staff members - in the administration section, please do not enable the "auto-update" feature - as this will over-ride the heavily modified code that makes this work with the NELT. Thanks for your time! :) http://project.shiftlinux.net
Barney T. Administrators Posted June 22, 2008 Administrators Share Posted June 22, 2008 Thanks to Brian and Dave Legg for this. I've added a few tasks already. If you didn't see your name on the task, it is because you haven't logged in (so we can add you to the list). *Pinned*

markwolfe Veteran Posted June 22, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 22, 2008 Awesome. Added some specific tasks into Lite to replace the more generalized item. I do have an item listed under Lite that I don't know who to assign to. It involves lighter alternatives to Shift ONE apps for the Lite version - apps that fit better on lower-end systems running fluxbox (like using AbiWord instead of OpenOffice). I think that this is more of an item that the team may need to review on an application-by-application basis as they are identified. I just assigned it to "Shift Linux" with no specific member. Commodore Max
Really great way to organize development. :)
Barney T. Administrators Posted June 22, 2008 Administrators Share Posted June 22, 2008 Although I posted a lot of items, they are by far not complete. If you guys see the need to add a task or post a file, please do. We also have a FTP server, thanks to the admins and Dave Legg. We can post an actual .iso or such on there. Brian M. Veteran Posted June 23, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted June 23, 2008 Just out of curiosity, do we know what the upstream speed of the server is? If we're planning a DVD version, it's going to require a lot more bandwidth, and if we don't have a fast server, it's going to take forever for everybody to download. DaveLegg Developer Posted June 23, 2008 Developer Share Posted June 23, 2008 Just out of curiosity, do we know what the upstream speed of the server is?If we're planning a DVD version, it's going to require a lot more bandwidth, and if we don't have a fast server, it's going to take forever for everybody to download. My server has a 100mbps pipe at the moment, so that could easily max out most home connections. If needs be, I'll upgrade that to 1gbps before a major release (cost difference for that is TINY) I also have access to a few other servers with 1gpbs pipes that we could probably use as mirrors if we need the extra capacity.
