Barney T. Administrators Posted June 28, 2008 Administrators Share Posted June 28, 2008 We only had two Shift development team members at today's meeting. I realize that everyone has commitments and we can t be at all of the meetings. However, if we plan to make this distro succeed, we need to move forward with the development. I will post deadlines and milestones to our Shift Project Management System, but we should have all of the basic tasks completed by 28 July. This includes finding appropriate apps, graphics, walls, and splash screens (betas), as well as an alpha version of Shift One. Bmaher has agreed to look into the DVD development and look at different Desk Manager presentations. I know Mark has Shift Lite close to ready. Max has agreed to put together graphics (with Cosmin). In addition, Cosmin has agreed to produce the graphics to brand Shift Lite. He will coordinate with Max and Mark to make sure all the graphics are unified. I will coordinate everyone's efforts and test as needed. We also have a SVN and FTP account for uploading files and isos. Please get with Dave Legg if you need access. I can not re-iterate how important it is to get the ball rolling here. If we can't get Shift development in high gear, we will need to come up with alternate plans, or Shift will die on the vine. I know you guys are committed, we just need to see some action.
Cosmin
I will coordinate everyone's efforts and test as needed. Team management is a problem here .. so would be perfect to coordinate . Cosmin

markwolfe Veteran Posted June 28, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 28, 2008 Absent due to kid's baseball (just like every other weekend). We lost :( My duties are pretty much on hold until given the Shift ONE graphics/apps and then I go to town on the Lite version. Worst case, and we need to downscale, we can start work on Lite immediately, and just release that. The Shift ONE can follow when manpower timings are more favorable - I know that busy periods for people tend to come and go.
Brian M. Veteran Posted June 29, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 29, 2008 Per yesterday, I've been looking up the installation issue, and I'm still preferring Suse's old way of doing things, where we include the base stuff (i.e. the basic Ubuntu install with no extra packages), and let the user select what to install. That way, we're only including one copy of each package, and installing what's needed (i.e. if the user doesn't want a specific package, they can elect to not install it). There can also be three standard "Shift" versions as options, which would install one of the 3 WMs, with the required packages. The only issue I can see is if a certain package needs configuring different ways for different WMs, however, it shouldn't be that hard to overcome with a couple of post-install scripts. Heck, we could even install the base system inc. apt, add the DVD as a source, and install the packages that way after the first reboot, similar to how Windows does. The alternative I can see is having 3 WMs installed to the same system, with the user choosing which to use upon initial boot (the others would stay there, or could possibly be "unchecked" during the install). Anyway, I'll keep digging - if anyone has any thoughts on the above, please let me know :p
Barney T. Administrators Posted June 29, 2008 Author Administrators Share Posted June 29, 2008 ^ Thanks all. If we can get the graphics on track with Shift Lite we can get that version up for testing. Thanks bmaher. Sounds like you are getting our DVD research up to speed. We can discuss the best way to offer the various DMs.............. personally, it may be better to have the packages for Gnome, KDE, or whatever on the DVD as a source, since everyone may not have instant access to the internet or Ubuntu servers........
