Trojan.Vundo virus infection

Hey,

First off im running windows vista!

Since this morning pop ups were appearing constantly when my younger sister was browsing basic kids sites (using internet explorer 7), and then when i went on my account i found windows explorer kept randomly closing when generally just on msn and browsing the net (firefox 3).

I run a virus scan using the latest norton anti virus with updates (in safe mode) and it came back with 2 items for attention both of which were the trojan.vundo which it says was high risk it tried to repair but says it was only partially repaired.

Restarted pc, went to the symantec website to find out more about the virus but it had it down as low risk and said it only affected up to XP :/

I tried their removal tool anyway (worth a shot right) and it didnt find anything but the effects were still happening.

I tried atribunes VundoFix and it came back with 4 files

I clicked remove but it said it couldnt and restarted.

Once restarted i went to the System32

I run spybot search and destroy and that came back with nothing.

I tried to do a system restore back to last wednesday but it errored.

I run a virus scan again and it comes back clean, i run the atribute vundofix again and it comes back with the same 4 files, i click remove again but it just errored and said the pc would automatically restart which it did.

Not sure what else to try!

I've never cleaned Vundo from Vista, but I'd imagine it would work the same.

Fix it through HJT, but don't reboot yet

You'll also want to make sure there aren't more files out there, so go to the System32 folder, and sort by Date Modified. Any new files with gibberish names is probably also Vundo. You can double-check by uploading to http://virusscan.jotti.org

You'll notice that you will be unable to delete these files. So just make note of those files (both from your HJT log, and any new files you find), and install Unlocker to be able to delete these files. http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Unlocker will install as a right-click option. And despite this program, you will still have to boot to Safe-mode to get Vundo to be deleted properly through unlocker.

Followed the instructions, there was a jibberish named file in System32 which i've now deleted

Is bearshare something you did on purpose?

Check your add/remove programs for anything that says it's a toolbar. Check IE to see what it thinks is an installed toolbar. Run MSCONFIG from the command line to disable stuff for a clean boot before you run HJT.

Just delete the most recent installed files from the system32 folder at the time of virus infection. I had the exact same virus.

I had the virus on XP a couple of months ago. Explorer.exe stopped working every minute or so.

BitDefender went crazy and found fake .ini files as viruses every 10 seconds or so, but not the actual virus.

I cheated on how to delete the virus/viruses by booting up Vista and then deleting some three suspicious .exe files from the XP system32 folder.

After I booted XP again, I saw BitDefender booking its tickets for a flight back to Romania. :p

Well I was infected once with a Vundo malware (Adware.Win32.Virtumonde.yff) and this is what someone mentioned to me.

right click and save this as roguefix.bat

http://www.internetinspiration.co.uk/downl...uefix_2.174.bat

and then just regular save this:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

run both in safe mode.

It seemed to work as I've never had a problem after doing it.
