Where does Ubuntu get it's resolutions from?

Recommended Posts

I'm used to going to /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change around available resolutions, but where xorg.conf has three, the Screen Resolution box has many more. So where are they coming from?

Hardy Heron here.

X gets its available resolutions from the config file, just like you normally use. These are used when you CTRL+ALT+[num pad plus/minus] through your resolutions.

However, X can also probe and see what possible resolutions are supported, which you can probably do by opening a terminal and typing xrandr (for X resolutions and rotations) to list resolutions, frequencies and rotations your hardware supports.
