markwolfe Veteran Posted July 3, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 3, 2008 Is this the first boot after install, is what i was asking. Did the install seem to go fine, then reboot just hang with a blank screen (with moveable mouse pointer)? Or were you presented a login screen, typed them in, then that is where it hangs? Just looking for specific detail on where it hangs. If you get your login screen, then X is ok, and Gnome configuration might the the problem. If you can't even get your graphical login screen, then we need to look at X, because the problem is before Gnome even comes into the equation. LeviS LoVEr
wasnt satisfied with Suse.. so installed Ubuntu again.. Yes it provides the login screen.. after providing the username and password the gnome sound of login comes and shows the desktop.. i can move the mouse pointer there but unable to open anything.. markwolfe Veteran Posted July 4, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 4, 2008 Ok, so you do have a desktop, then? And when you say you "can't open anything", does that mean even the menus are unresponsive? Or just some apps? Or some specific desktop icons?

Perhaps something is sucking up all your CPU time? Are you able to drop down to a virtual terminal ( CTRL+ALT F1 through F6 ), log in through the command line and type the command 'top'. See perhaps if something is hanging causing the system to be unresponsive, if possible.
