semifamous
Instead of __ minutes/hours ago, it would be cooler if it had actual times... I leave my browser open all the time. Firefox session manager brings up Neowin every time I do have to close and reopen it. Sometimes, neowin is cached, and I see the old page, but the news post says it's from 1 hour ago, when it looks familiar to something think I saw yesterday. I can hit refresh to update it, but I don't always realize how old that news is until I do refresh it and see how long ago it was...
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted July 4, 2008 Global Moderator Share Posted July 4, 2008 don't you need to refresh it anyways to see updated news?

When do you see cached pages? That concerns me much more, as I've never had that happen to me and could be problematic.
semifamous
When I open my browser first thing in the morning, it shows whatever was the session saved from the previous day until I remember to tell it to refresh. I don't always think of it until I realize how familiar the top story looks from glancing at it so often. But throughout the day, Neowin is being reloaded from time to time so I can see the new news. Tab Mix Plus is told to reload the tab every so often, so that when I go to the front page, I just expect the news to be the latest. Sometimes, for some reason I don't know yet, Tab Mix Plus stops doing it's auto-reload thing, and the top story stays at the top for quite a while. Of course, it's still just "2 hours old," so I don't think about it until I realize that my computer isn't doing what I've told it to do. Just now, for example, I was visiting the front page and the top story about the PDF format was just 8 hours old. Then I hit refresh. Now it says it's from July 4th at 9:50, over 48 hours old from here. If it had a time stamp originally, then I would be able to tell by that information that my data was very old and was not the latest. The time stamps there, are they based on the time zone setting I have set for the forum, or are they just the time stamp on the server? I realize that this is something that very few (read: one) people will notice, but I still think it would be better if the news stories had a time stamp when they were posted instead of a vague reference to its age that could be off by quite a bit. Unless you want to update the age with some sort of javascript...
