omgyjya
I tried running the newest version of Ubuntu and it ran decently well after turning the Desktop effects off but still would occasionally slow down and act really really bad. With that said - What version of Ubuntu would run best on a PC with the following specs. 1.8ghz Sempron 512mb ddr ram

omgyjya
get a new computerand gOS Sure, As soon as that sweet money order from you arrives in the mail I will be sure to get a new PC. Thanks buddy! As for gOS - I'm not to sure what to appeal is for a operating system created with MySpace users in mind. I'm assuming your recommendation wasn't a serious one? Anyways - Anyone with any educated recommendations?
Budious
I'd think the regular version of Ubuntu would run just fine on your desktop. I used to have Ubuntu 6.04/6.10 installed with xfce desktop on a PIII 500MHz with 192MB of memory and it ran smoothly enough for Firefox, email, and word processing purposes. If you want a distro with XFCE integrated, xubuntu.org has released a 8.04 Ubuntu based distribution.

markwolfe Veteran Posted July 6, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 6, 2008 As Budious was talking about, let me clarify. I hope that you aren't asking if you should run 6.04 instead of a newer 8.04. You will want to run a current version, but use a lighter window manager, like XFCE. So Xubuntu 8.04 would probably be my recommendation, too. +Raphaël G. MVC Posted July 6, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 6, 2008 get a new computerand gOS sigh... very helpfull... As Budious was talking about, let me clarify. So Xubuntu 8.04 would probably be my recommendation, too. Agreed. An older version won't give you better performance than a new one (not much anyway, and I've been using 6.10 to 8.04 on the same machine). Regular Ubuntu (with gnome) is not always snappy on my machine (laptop, Intel Centrino, with Intel video chipset). But Xubuntu (with XFCE) just flies! Conclusion: give Xubuntu 8.04 a spin :)

4CxbqFxVnstmA Veteran Posted July 6, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 6, 2008 He already tried regular Ubuntu... Read below: Sorry I misread it. I run Ubuntu 8.04 with all desktop effects off, just using Metacity with no compositing or anything, and I've got a slower processor. It works speedy. I wonder if the slowness for him is the ram then, as I've got twice the ram and never get slowdowns. It's just from an ease of use perspective I think Gnome is nicer than Xfce, though more memory intensive.

On my Intel i915 integrated graphics regular Ubuntu is rather slow :(
