NeoXY
Hi All, For all those who don't know, Nvidia have been suffering a bit of a headache when it announced that many of its GPU (Mainly the 8xxx series) are experiencing some serious issues. Today, Engadget have ran with a story that possibly all 8400/8600mGT chips could be in trouble. All MacBook Pro users of the last few revisions have one flavor or another of the 8600mGT, my question is, if these stories are true (and by the looks of it, its pretty confirmed as is), what will become of our machines? The story can be found here: http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/10/all-nvi...ulty/2#comments For the record, my GPU is currently idling at 65C. I've always known this, but didn't assume it to be an issue. I can game and work just fine without any sort of weird crashes, but I suspect that under these conditions, the life of the machine would be shortened? Plus, now that Nvidia have come out publicly in regards to these issues, how would Apple respond? Cheers
Cadium
If, for whatever reason that there is a defect in these graphics cards (which I am still a bit weary of, I have had my MacBook Pro for 7 months and haven't had it crash once), then I would imagine that Apple would provide a logic board replacement program as they have done in the past for PowerBooks and iBooks that had widespread hardware issues. From what I understand, it is more complex than just "teh nvidia quality sucks' - OEMs over clock their gpus, but them in situations where heat given out is not taken into account when under a heavy load etc. Considering that Nvidia will compensate their customers (OEMs), I'm sure Apple will fix it up given it costs them nothing to do it. WelshBluebird
just a thing, the original source is from the inquirer. Not really the most reliable sites tbh. Though if they are right, and all 8400 and 8600 cards are defective, will that mean dell and other OEM's will have to compensate all customers? Honestly, I'm not entirely sure whats going to happen. Although the original story came from the inquirer, engadget decided to run it which is sold enough for me. Anyways, as a poster on another forum said: I'm just not comfortable with the idea of using a ticking time bomb" go figure :/

As far as I know, the GPUs in the MacBook Pros are running at a stock clock setting and run under clocked when not being fully utilized.

True, but how well is the air flow and cooling. I've seen laptops ridiculously slim only to find they over heat when put under a heavy load for a long period of time. I've always maintained that these designs should be stress tested for hours, maxing out the cpu and gpu - and see how well the heat is handled. Cara Veteran Posted July 15, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 15, 2008 The fail rate on the MBP's GPU is very low at the moment, I checked with a support manager and they are not seeing anything other than an increase in calls asking if Apple is recalling them so I'm not really that concerned myself (and I have 2 MBP's with the 8600 chipset). If something does break lose, Apple will handle it appropriately as needed... If you experience problems with your MBP's graphics call AppleCare or visit your local Apple Retail Location's Genius Bar and have it diagnosed, if there is a problem I'm sure it will be taken care of, if under warranty, at no charge. :)
