No icons visible in Ubuntu after login

Recommended Posts

Hi

I do hope this thread is still going, because I am suffering the same problem. My problem is with Ubuntu 6 64bit version. My login screen comes up, I can login with my user name and password, but no icons are visible and I can't do anything on the desktop. Does anyone have a solution to this??!!

Thanks in advance.

This might be better handled as a separate thread.

When you login, does the normal Gnome startup stuff happen, but just missing icons? And your menus don't work, either?

How about the mouse? Does it move the pointer about when you move the mouse? Does the keyboard work? (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to restart X, for example) Can you switch to TTY mode using CTRL+ALT+F2, and login there at the command line?
