Auto-NDISwrapper

Recommended Posts

This program automatically looks at what Wi-Fi card you have, it disables any wireless driver currently installed, fetches the correct Windows driver from the Internet and installs it with NDISwrapper.

Isn't this already in Ubuntu? When I install Ubuntu, it automatically detects my Broadcom 4318 card and I just have to press the Wifi button to go wireless. It could be helpful in PCLos, NDISwrapper just wouldn't work for me. :(

Bit a flaw in their plan. If you have no internet because your wireless doesn't work - how exactly is it going to connect to the internet to download the driver?

^ That's what has annoyed me about some distributions that don't include ndiswrapper on install or on the install disc. The only way to get it is from the internet - which you don't have, because if you did, you wouldn't need ndiswrapper.

Most laptops have what is known as an "ethernet jack" that you can connect a cable to. :p

Except Mac Air, as a notable exception.

My PC has a wireless USB dongle...the router is miles away - not literally, but a long way for a cable I don't have, and off the top of my head, I'm not sure if the router even has any wired ports.

I'm sure this Auto-ndiswrapper is great, when it works, but for a lot of situations it won't. Step in the right direction though.

If only this were ported to Windows, so it could burn a CD that you just run in Linux and it installs the drivers from there...

Because it dosnt need it, Wireless is supported Out of the Box on both OS X and Most Linux Distros :)

Because I'd rather ditch this machine and spend ?400 on something I don't have a need for...wait...what?:pp

/If/ I felt inclined to spend my hard earned moolar on something so linux was compatible with my hardware, I'd just get a wireless dongle/card/whatever that it does support:pp Bit cheaper than a laptop me thinks.

someone who knows more than me will hopefully correct me if im wrong here, but the restricted driver utility that comes with ubuntu uses fwcutter, which, by my reading does not work at the same speed that can be had from using ndiswrapper and the original windows drivers.
