Update on Shift Progress

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.....

Just wanted to give you guys an update on what we've been up to........

1) Max has developed some prototypes on the wallpaper that we are putting together for Shift One. He will get with Cosmin about the bootsplash and the designs for Shift Lite (Cosmin has the task of adapting these for Fluxbox). Max said he will work this weekend on them.

2) Bmaher is looking working on the actual DVD development. We have talked about several pathways to have the installer choose packages (either form the DVD itself, or a repository). We are lookiing into either a Fedora type package installer, or an Automatix2 type installer. This also includes the choice of desktop managers.

3) Ste is working on the scripts we need to accomplish #2 above. The idea would be to install a base system, then have the script run in order to download and install the chosen packages and desktop manager. He is working with java apps at this time.

4) Mark is waiting for Max and Cosmin to complete the graphics, then he will import them to Shift Lite. I expect this will be completed this weekend, or as soon there after as possible.

5) Simon has agreed to assist and advise on the actual development of Shift One. While he is busy at a new job, he will be available to answer questions and help if we get stuck along the way.

6) I would like to have another IRC meeting next weekend (26 July) for a pre-release huddle.

That's it at this time. Post your developments as you get them! :)

For #2/3, are we downloading the packages, or including them on the DVD?

I just remember when I tried a network install version of suse and was incredibly annoyed with it :p. Once ste's worked out the scripts etc to get the stuff installed, I'll crack on with the development of the DVD.

For #1, wallpapers and bootsplash are directly transferable. Not sure what would need to be adapted to flux for those, since neither of them involve fluxbox at all.

As for #4 with the theme graphics, this weekend would be great! I will be on family vacation middle of the week after, all through the weekend, so getting something in to look at before then would be fantastic.

I am also probably able to resurrect an old (we are talking maybe 700MHz) box to dedicate to Shift Flux as my test box. I will practically be a real tester soon! :p

Just a heads up, but I haven't heard anything from Ste yet, and tbh, I don't want to start unless we've finalised how we're going to do it, in case the way I do it is the complete opposite to Ste's scripts

Quick update, the way it looks is as follows:

- Minimal ubuntu live cd (i.e. ubuntu live cd with all packages removed).

- The installer will feature the package selection screen as well as the usual bits and pieces.

- The installer will then install the base system (due to the way it works, this includes gnome).

- The system will then restart, and depending on the selection made, it will either continue to install packages, or remove gnome (by means of removing the ubuntu-desktop package) and then install kde (by installing the kubuntu-desktop package, followed by installing the packages that were chosen during installation.

I've looked around, but I can't seem to find a way of getting around the interim-restart. It must be possible, as other installers install packages on the fly, however, the Ubuntu installer looks to be image based (i.e. it copies the live cd image and changes it). If anyone can find a way to latch a package installer onto the end of the ubuntu installer, it'd be perfect :p.

edit: from tomorrow I have 2 days in which I have nothing work related to do, so hopefully we should have a working demo/experimental iso by the weekend :p

Another quick update - on the research front, it's pretty much done.

I've worked out how to install the packages without rebooting, which means it's just a case of attaching the package installer to the end of the Ubuntu installer.
