xinary
Why is it that neowin is on such a power trip that my little brother can't have an account here. Just because he registered with the same IP. I try to explain that but you all just make me out to be a loser who creates multiple accounts. I am sure this will be closed immediately, but let it serve as a warning to anyone who is thinking of inviting a room mate / brother to joining neowin. The so called "Moderators" are looking for ANY reason to punish those they don't like, or may simply even just disagree with them.
DrewJW
Well opening a thread like this will NOT help your case. I would find it better to make a detailed email to the administrators, and explain to them your situation and that you can prove over the phone it needs be that you are indeed two separate persons. You see forums are like that purely due to abuse, and I understand why they do this. But posting topics like this up will only get you negative attention. Max Veteran Posted July 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 19, 2008 There are too many people who abuse the system, and it reflects negatively upon those who don't. Not much an be done really about this though. Maybe if you ask an admin really really nicely...
Joel
The so called "Moderators" are looking for ANY reason to punish those they don't like, or may simply even just disagree with them. Crap, he found us out. My life will be less now that everyone knows I have nothing better to do with my day than hope I get someone to punish. With your history, you're lucky the new account didn't get you banned. I can't go into the rest of the details, but the timing of your brother signing up is awfully coincidental. You have to realise that we see this on a day to day basis, and that we've also heard all of the, "my brother/roommate/sister/son/father signed up too, it's not a dupe!" lines there are. The first reaction is always to going to be the same; ban and warn. Instead of sounding like you're a wronged 12-year-old who can't have ice cream, why not just try communicating with a staff member about your concerns? CrashG
I was going to get the wife to make an account, but then thought about it being from the same IP address, and told her not to as it might get me/us banned/warned. I do understand the reasons for it though, a few screw it up for the rest of us.
PixilEyes
Have you tried to PM a moderator? Have you tried posting without un needed insults. If your sure it would close why bother even posting. Need attention much? Your pretty immature and I'm assuming your spoiled at life.

You can not accurately track sock puppets by IP address alone, you need other methods to help if you want to be accurate.

Marshalus Veteran Posted July 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 19, 2008 We have many members here from the same IP address, brothers, sisters, family, friends, roommates, etc. Many people post from schools, university networks, public Internet locations, or from the same house, without any problems what so ever. Most of the Internet is filled with dynamic IP addresses... I know for a fact that if I checked my IP address there would be at least one other person using it. However, it only becomes a problem when troublemakers have "friends" who are also troublemakers from the same address. The general rule is, if you have a warning level of 20% or less, we never blink an eye... if you are a member who is frequently warned, restricted or banned... and then suddenly you have a "brother" who wants an account... sorry. Even if they are a different person, trouble rides in packs.

Hum
I really don't see why someone would want 2 accounts here. They only time I started a second one, was due to terrible other member harassment. And the Mods punished ME, with a warning. Oh well.

Joe User
yeah i know, the question was rhetorical ;) Oh, nevermind then, but I do have some funny (and sad) stories on the subject. Had a guy once with 5 accounts all for the sole purpose of fighting with his other accounts, and no one else. Very strange. His ex-wife later told me he had been doing it for years, dating back to pre-internet dial ups.
+shift. MVC Posted July 19, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 19, 2008 Funny, the Neowin staff is probably some of the most fair and reasonable people I've ever come across on an internet forum. Absolutely correct. With these forums, if SOMEONE steps too far out of line you can be sure somebody with authority will deal with it. Seems like the OP is just using this thread as a means of venting his frustration that has built up due to "poor" moderating in another thread.... Fred Derf Veteran Posted July 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 19, 2008 Two members may share an IP if they are both squeaky clean and they don't draw our attention. Some examples of this has been noted earlier in this thread. If they behave themselves then it doesn't really matter to us. Once members start getting warnings, however, we cannot say if it was the father or the son that misbehaved. We cannot trust that the father will not use the son's account or vice-versa. For cases like this we have a "sins of the father" policy. All warnings from family members affect them both. If one gets banned then they both get banned.
