Install Debian via Wireless

Recommended Posts

Hey all.

I have no way to get ethernet on my laptop, the internet is provided by WPA-PSK wireless. Is there anyway to get Debian to install over wireless or must I get a cable/download all the CDs.

Network Card is broadcomm so ndiswrapper will most lilely be needed, although I have a natively supported USB card, if needed.

Thanks,

Simsie

Unless it's natively supported, which I doubt it is, you're going to have to download the CDs. However, the good news is that you can usually get away with just downloading the first 1-2 CDs. The rest of them aren't needed as these 2 (or maybe it's just the first? I think CD 2 includes KDE if you want that) provide the base install and everything you need to get started. Once you get a minimal system up you can then configure your wireless so you can install anything else you may need.

I noticed the debian installer has a thing at the end asking me what I want my PC to do [desktop, laptop, web server etc]. is it possible to get that screen back after I've exited the installer?

My thinking is to a base install to terminal, set ndiswrapper up using the terminal, then resume the install with wireless.

Yes (the command is tasksel), but you're still going to have a hard time getting netinstall to work over wireless. You can't just quit in mid install and drop to the console.

Thanks.

I'll install BASE and then when it gets to the tasksel screen tell it I want to do nothing and then restart and go from there. Will see how it goes. For novelty if nothing more.

If you have a second laptop, you could route the internet connection from the wireless adapter to the wired-ethernet adapter on that laptop, and connect it with a network cable to the machine you are trying to do a debian netinst on.
