MoiN
Hey guys, I've recently installed ubuntu.. was wondering what are the best instant messengers for it? main concern would be runnin yahoo etc.. thanks MoiN
tiagosilva29
Ubuntu comes with Pidgin. That should be enough for your Yahoo account. There are more clients for *nix.
tsupersonic
Pidgin is the way to go. Yahoo also has web messenger that runs in your browser, and Yahoo also integrates IM in email too
Fish
I've been using Carrier (formally Funpidgin) recently. It's a fork of Pidgin, but the devs are a little less "up tight" about their project, and are happy to to listen to users feedback and try and implement new ideas. Galaxium is looking good and will certainly develop into a nicely rounded chat program. aMSN is good if you really need webcam support, but the interface is ugly. Emesene is a nice lightweight WLM clone. Both only use the MSN protocol though.

AaronMT
I have been using Emesene An IM for the WLMTM/MSN network It's a nice looking GTK application that is very customizable/minimal and a sweet alternative to Pidgin. sudo apt-get install emesene Highly recommended. Brian M. Veteran Posted August 1, 2008 Veteran Share Posted August 1, 2008 I actually use Pidgin on both Windows and Linux. For linux, if you don't need webcam support, it's the best, by far.

robz0rz
I'm enjoying Pidgin. The version in ubuntu's repositories is not up to date though. The newest version has some cool features. I recommend getting it from here.
