fix-this!
im thinking about giving the new ubuntu x64 a try on my pc. i have a few questions though, does java and flash work ? i have heard people were having problems with these ? also i may want to give ubuntu the feel and look of vista to make my wife feel more comfortable on it at first, can you recommend any good places or themes, what not ? when it comes to my geforce 8800gt do i need to install official drivers or just use the restricted drivers that ubuntu provides ? CCRATA
Java works, for flash there is a workaround you have to do but the process is well documented on the Ubuntu X64 forums

FISO
I'll jump in here, since I've been using the 64bit version of Ubuntu for around a year now. Flash works just fine, java every now and again comes across a website it doesn't like but I haven't had a problem with those in a while. To get both installed use the apt-get command and install the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" example command: "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras" For the look and feel of vista, you're probably just going to need to look around for a theme, try gnome-look.org as they have more than a few themes (your best bet to get close to vista themes is compiz which is installed by default) I would suggest installing "envy" and let that control your nvidia drivers, although the restricted ones work just the same. Envy just seems to keep theme update a little more. I have no idea about Silverlight and Moonlight. If you have any more questions, ask away. ViperAFK
Just install the flash plugin as normal via synaptic in 64 bit ubuntu it sets it up automatically, no need for work arounds, I just did this.
FISO
Adobe reader, it's under acroread in apt. Now that I think of it, you might need to enable/add some repositories for some of these. Go to software sources under system/administration and make sure the archive.canonical.com repositories are selected. And also add the medibuntu repository using these commands in the terminal: Adds the repositories: sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list Adds the key ring and updates your repository list: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update Hope this helps, Fiso thanks, can you recommend a good pdf reader for x64 ?i though it would be more complicated for the java / flash install. i could of swore i heard people say they were having issues with these in x64. Nope as ViperAFK said, it's pretty straight forward now, the ubuntu-restricted-extras installs it and configure it all, also gives you some other handy programs, and I think it includes the Microsoft font pack (arial, time new roman, etc). markwolfe Veteran Posted July 27, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 27, 2008 It sounds like you have things pretty much under control, at least as you start getting ready. Let me just pipe in and comment that you probably don't need to theme it to look like Vista for your wife to be comfortable with Ubuntu. My wife likes Ubuntu just fine the way it is (once she gets the wallpaper she prefers) :p

My wife likes Ubuntu just fine the way it is (once she gets the wallpaper she prefers) :p well i aim to please her since she asked me to do it. :p thanks for all of the responses guys, ill probably do the install tonight or tomorrow. we may make the move to stick with linux for good once she gets used to it. im glad i get responses here, they don't seem to be very helpful on the ubuntu forums. i want x64 because i have 4 gigs of ram i want to utilize or id just go with the 32 bit install instead.
