Boktai1000
Hey, I'm thinking about maybe getting a new graphics card for my birthday or sometime soon when I decide to upgrade from my current card (Nvidia 6800GT). I was originally planing to go with a Nvidia 8800GT but I'm hearing really good things about ATI now with there 4850/4870 cards. I game in both Windows and Linux via Wine, and I was wondering how well these new ATI cards preform under Linux, I know that a while ago they used to have tons of problems with there drivers, for example I play WoW and there were numerous problems ATI users had, but they've recently been opening up to open source drivers so there getting better, so any input on how well these new drivers preform (stability and fps wise) would be nice. Mouldy Punk
Last I heard, the ATI drivers are getting better, but they're still pretty bad when compared with their windows counterparts, or even the nVidia linux drivers.
mitch00
I think right now nVidia still has a clear advantage in terms of linux drivers. However, in the long run (unless nVidia opens up their source... doubtful at this time) I think ATi is the way to go. How far away will it take for "the long run" to kick in? Well that's the tricky part.... ;)
Typhon
I tired gaming in Ubuntu but it was too much work. The new 4870 would make you very happy. I think right now you can grab one for about $280.00, so cheap and the new drivers that just came out give it about a 6% performance increase in windows. Boktai1000
Ah choices... If ATIs *nix driver was on par with Nvidias I would get the 4850 in a heartbeat, I don't think I'd get the 4870 if I went ATI, but I'm still deciding... I'm thinking 3 different cards now, EVGA 8800GT or 9800GTX+ (those 9800GTX+'s are on pre-order at newegg, and I have heard of some issues with the 9 series), or an ATI 4850 but only the driver is holding me back :(. Also, whats a good brand for ATI? I really don't like ASUS that much lol because my current 6800GT is made by ASUS and the heat sink actually fell off! A bunch of other users apparently reported the same issue, sadly I only found out about it until after I got it, and they never did anything about it (of course I did end up buying a 3rd party heat sink and attaching it myself). Glowstick
For *nix, best bet is NVidia right now.

The 9800GTX is a good card the only problem is fan speed settings with rivaturner. I hacked my fan wires and used a molex connector so the fan is always 100%. What type of games do you want to play? And why Linux gaming? It was a pain in the ass for me but you probably know more about Linux than me.
Boktai1000
Well I prefer to use Ubuntu over XP, although I do have both installed, why reboot when I can play it just fine in Ubuntu, I'm not saying it doesn't take some configuring but once you do it your set, just like any OS. I have WoW, Oblivion, Crysis, Half-Life 2, Portal and BF2, yes this does sound a little crazy but you can actually play Crysis in Linux if you have a good enough graphics card, 8 series recommended, but its only due to the nvidia driver over time it will work its way up to the performance of the windows one. Well then I would just get an 8800GTS or if you going to play games on xp/vista get the 4850. Never used a Ati card in Ubuntu just a 6800GS with CSS and it played crappy.
