Shift:one & Shift:lite builds

Recommended Posts

I have uploaded the first Shift:one alpha ISO to the FTP server, which anyone can test if they like (it's on the FTP server, if you need login details, PM me).

The plan is to keep this thread updated on a build-by-build basis, so we all know how it's coming along. If you make any changes to an ISO on the FTP server, please update the "README" file so we know what changes have been made.

The ISO I have uploaded contains a minimal install of both KDE and Gnome, with the installer working. If anyone can see any bugs, or changes to the base install that need to be changed, let us know (suggestions are always welcomed with open arms :p). Hopefully we'll have the package manager integrated in the next week or so, and then it's just a case of adding packages, and configuring things. I know it's nothing special, but it should give us the firm base we need to move on. From the README:

This is the latest Shift:one Alpha Build. The distribution is currently in the following state (if you change the ISO, please update this file):

- Both KDE 4.1 final and Gnome installed. Both appear to be working.

- KDE is the non-kubuntu version with no visible ubuntu branding

- Removed as many apps as possible, leaving us with a fairly clean install to work with

- Installer works from both Gnome and KDE (although there is no desktop icon in KDE, however, sudo ubiquity works as I've installed ubiquity-frontend-kde, I'll try to find the cause of the missing icon, as it's shown in /home/shift/Desktop)

- Package Manager has not been latched onto the installer yet. Ste is currently looking into it - if we have any Python developers around it would be helpful, as Ubiquity (ubuntu's installer) is basically 99.9% Python, and my Python is rusty at best

- Skinning/branding not done yet

- Optimised boot time - somehow it manages to boot faster from the ISO in VMware than a standard Ubuntu ISO :s

This is where we should be within the next week or so:

- Package manager built/latched onto the installer

- Compiz? Haven't had a chance to test it out yet, as VMware doesn't have compatible drivers, and I'm missing a processor to build a test machine :(

- Find a way to store packages within the ISO without them being copied - I think we're going to have to add them after we've built the ISO, somehow

And after that?

- Branding

- Polishing Off

Tell me what you need :) .. I've sent you a PM with past request ( ↓ ) & it's finished (psd). For Shift Lite I also have a nice simplified concept wallpaper/bootscreen

I'm wondering if you can put small words in the lower right hand corner that says: Shift Lite and another for Shift One

Looks good....... can you put the shift logo in the center of the wall? And we'll need one for Shift Lite.

Our next task will be to create a theme.......... I wonder who can get that going? Mr. EggSalad did our last one.

It is in the center but I've captured just what we need to view ;) ( right-down corner) ; the shift lite is also ready & available ( I'll send you both jpeg.). For themes I need to collaborate or hear first ideas .

I'm now back, and I finally have my laptop back (well, it's a laptop anyway).

I'll try to get with Ste and hopefully get working on the package manager at some point in the next couple of days. Now I have this, I can also look into the tablet drivers (they drive everyone mad on the Ubuntu forums, so if we can get them working OOTB, we may be able to grab a few users :p)
