ubuntu won't work!

ok, i need a little help, ubuntu tries to scan my hard drive on start up but freezes at stage 1/5 100/291 and if i abort the scan before this point ubuntu loads but no programs open and it will eventually freeze after a minute or so of being logged on. can anyone help me?

anyway, sounds like a possible hardware failure or something maybe... is your hardware in perfectly fine condition to your knowledge not too old or thrashed or anything ? RAM, Hard drive etc...

ok im in ubuntu now and it allows me to open firefox and my desktop terminal loads but all other new windows show up as blank.

It might be worth turning off compiz. You can go to System>Preferences>Appearance and the Visual Effects tab and select 'none'. Worth a go!
