Sethos
Not seen that one yet, but it just started slowing to a crawl for me - 10+ seconds load per page ...

Steven P. Administrators Posted August 7, 2008 Administrators Share Posted August 7, 2008 It has to do with the occasional high server load. The front page explains that our developers are still busy configuring the server to handle the site.
DaveLegg Developer Posted August 7, 2008 Developer Share Posted August 7, 2008 I'm still tweaking the odd thing. That just then was me working out why the conversion of tables to INNODB failed earlier, and getting innodb support back up and running, (required a restart of mysql)

DaveLegg Developer Posted August 8, 2008 Developer Share Posted August 8, 2008 I just notice it happens whenever I try to do a search. Search is now down until the move is completed, as the search engine runs on one of the boxes still in the old DC that will be pulled today. We did not see it as critical enough to need to setup temporarily on the new box. In the meantime, you can try using google with the site:neowin.net keyword in your search. Just for the record, the google site search sucks. Royally. No ability to sort for recent posts (say, threads I have participated in during the past week or so to see if responses are needed. Search is my most-used feature, and it is pretty much totally gone, for any practical purpose. :(

The alternative to turning the engine off is setting it to 'manual' searching, which with a database our size, would take around an hour for each search request. Get a few people searching and the site would come to a standstill. We're trying to give the best experience we can to as many people as we can, unfortunately, that means some have to suffer for a little while, such as frequent users of the search feature. markwolfe Veteran Posted August 9, 2008 Veteran Share Posted August 9, 2008 ^^^ I understand the reasons. A server relocation and a new server (and repurposing the previous servers) is a large task with tradeoffs during the transition. I am just very happy that Neowin survived the recent slashdotting without a total meltdown. Good work, overall! (Y)

(Y) I'm taking a holiday once it's done. If I get too stressed out, I'm taking a holiday before it's done and you'll all have to suffer :p :p I told the staff not to get us on Digg until we're back up to full capacity, so they go and get us on Slashdot instead. Imagine my face when I heard that!
