Installing Adobe Type 1 Fonts on OSX

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've got some Adobe fonts with a .pmf and .pfb extension (or something similar) that i'd like to use with Mac OS X - how do I install them? When I add them to my fonts folder they don't appear. I thought the Adobe Type Manager would work, but it says that it's already included with OS X. Any ideas?

Cheers,

Nick

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Basically, that page just tells you to copy the fonts over to the fonts folder (i'm using /Library/Fonts), and that you don't require Type Manager unless you want to use the Classic environment (which I don't, as i've not got it installed).

Any ideas how I can get these fonts working? I've copied them to my fonts folder but they don't show up in any applications.

Sorry to resurrect this ancient thread, but i've now moved back to Windows, then back to an iBook G4 (here to stay this time!), and I still have this font (ITC Franklin Gothic) that I want to get installed.

Any ideas on how I could do this? Maybe some app that will convert it to TTF or dfont?

Cheers,

Nick

How do you mean?

I think what the problem is that I have the font in PC Type 1 format, and need to convert it to Mac Type 1 format. Theres a program called TransType that does that, but the OS X version isn't free, the OS 9 version is free for 3 days use, but I don't have OS 9. I don't suppose somebody would just be able to pop into Classic for me and convert this font? Please... :)

Right, i've been doing more searching around and i've found that OS X should be able to handle PC Type 1 fonts fine. I've added the fonts to my /Library/Fonts folder, and they do work, but only in Adobe programs like InDesign and Photoshop... i'll have to stick with this, and see if I can get a TTF version of the font to use in things like Flash.

Cheers,

Nick

Maybe it's just me, but I could have sworn there's a 3rd file type to go along with the font...

You might be right. I have a few Type 1 fonts (albeit they are on the PC, but I believe they are universal), and they have three files associated with them: .pfm, .pfb, .afm .

Only the .pfm files have an actual file association with Windows, but all three are required for the font to work. I'm not certain if it works the same on the Mac.

This is possibly my first post in the Mac forums!
