neon sign

Question

i was messing around making an image tonight and while i like it so far, i was lookin for some tips to make it seem a little more realistic. i tried lighting effects, grains, etc, but it still needs a lot of work...the banner looks like crap imo. im not really sure in which direction im heading. anyway, any gurus with some tips ? :p

If you are going for realism, the text is too flat to look like a tube. There wouldn't be a drop shadow on the tube, because then it doesn't show the lighting on the trust support for the neon sign. Unless that building was built yesterday, there would be some grungyness on the bricks or chipped. as for the spot light pointing up on the wall, you have the shadows in the wrong place. The neon light should also be partially shining on the bricks, you are having the neon be too overpowered by the spotlight as well. Tone down the spotlight a bit. Now as far as the "Ivana" poster, I think you should do away with it, or give it a huge revamp. Unless that sign is made of wood, it's too stiff and doesnt have any flow or texture. I don't know if it is another neon light or not because it has an outer glow, but if not, I would take off that layer effect. Also I noticed that you're neon sign slowly fades away, but it makes it seem like the light gets faded, which it shouldn't, the entire neon sign should be the same brightness. You're getting there though. Scenery is one of the hardest things to do in pshop. Go visit bertmonroy.com and check out his gallery, you can get some ideas that way as far as his scenery works.
