I was wondering if you have thought about doing this...

For no registered/not logged in users on the site they have no choice but to use the lite version of the main pages and forum?

This should be a little easier on the servers and bandwidth. It shouldnt be a problem for users who are logged in because you use cookies to keep the user logged in between sessions. I personally think it would be a good idea.

Any comments?

I think it's a good idea.

On one hand we want to show new visitors what we got (the lite themes don't show the beauty of neowin)

On the other hand (more important imho) there's no need to spend all those server resources on, for example, the flood of slashdot guests we get every now and again.

https://www.neowin.net/index_m.shtml hasn't been "updated" in a few days. I realize it's a static page, but it should be automatically updated each time a news story is added...

I was beginning to think there was no news for the past couple of days...

Is that page the "old way" of doing things? Did things get changed? Because now if I just go to the main page, instead of getting a static page, I get an index.php (which is still dynamic and sucks resources.)

I have the index_m set as my homepage because for some reason, that was what was set in the address bar when I clicked on "Switch to Neowin Lite" back when it first started. If that's not the preferred method anymore, then I'll just change my settings.... I just thought that a static html page was what you were going for....

[edit]

It also would be usefuil to have My Neowin added to the Neowin Lite theme..... Please???

There's nothing wrong with the lite pages it's just that the index_m/g/s.shtml pages no longer work and will be deleted soon.

I had to change the way things work because of gzip.

Just access neowin through index.php

OK timdorr.... Now that the lite page isn't completely static anymore, and is generated by index.php, can the option be implemented to turn on (and off?) the "My Neowin" section? Maybe have "My Neowin" be another preferences page in the board control panel or something perhaps to decide whether it's on or off?

idaknow... I'm just throwing out bad ideas here. I'm good at bad ideas....

9. No spamming. Spamming is characterized by the initiation of threads or posts that contribute nothing to a forum, be it off topic or on topic. Examples include: empty bodies, bodies with few words that have no relation to the current thread or discussion and those posts that state they are spam, either to annoy, advertise or increase a member's post count. Resurrecting old forum posts is also not appreciated unless it serves a worthy cause to the forum. This determination is made by the forum Moderator or Administrator and is not up for discussion.

please don't resurrect a thread to say "lite rocks"

    • This is not surprising of course and I stopped using Chrome years ago.
    • It's not that we have to many ads? WTF? LOL
    • I switched to AdGuard for this very reason. All my uBlock filters and user scripts ported over with no issues.
    • This is a hot take, but I only use "New" Outlook for 1 reason, the "My Day" side bar that shows your tasks and Calendar on "New" Outlook allows you to view shared calendars and not just your personal calendar. On "Classic" Outlook it only allows your personal Calendar. For my job, we have a group shared Calendar that shows appointments and scheduled tasks for the team and we don't really use our personal calendars.
    • Opera for Android gets redesigned home page with FIFA World Cup tracker by Taras Buria FIFA World Cup 2026 is kicking off in the United States later this week, and Opera, a popular cross-platform browser, is making it easier to track matches on mobile. Today, Opera announced a redesigned home page for its Android browser. The new home page is now "more immersive" with easier access to common browser features. Users can now customize Speed Dial icons (round, square, or squircle), enjoy a new weather widget with real-time conditions, and open AI Mode or a private session with a single tap. Additionally, the browser now has a built-in football tracker, allowing you to follow your favorite team without using dedicated apps. The tracker displays live scores, notifications, and statistics in a dedicated football hub. You can also check out line-ups, match events, and more. Opera surveyed its users, and 38% of responders said they plan to follow the FIFA World Cup 2026 in a browser. The tournament starts on June 11 and ends on July 19, 2026. "By providing football fans with instant access to live scores alongside a more considered design, we’re ensuring they are never more than a tap away from the action, even when they can't watch live," said Tim Lesnik, Product Manager at Opera Mobile. For Opera users in the United States, Opera runs a contest, offering them a chance to win tickets to a match in Miami in July, Android smartphones, PlayStation 5 consoles, smart TVs, and Amazon Vouchers. Users can participate by posting on social media with the #OperaFandom hashtag from June 12 or by signing up on the official Opera website. Opera will announce winners on July 3. You can download Opera for Android from the Google Play Store using this link.
