It isn't hard to not be rude to one another, just think before you post.

The forum is run and owned by Neobond & co.

This isn't a democracy, its their forum, they make the rules, follow them or leave, its not that hard to understand. And things can be taken back if a mistake happens.

As for paying, you donate and get "extras" because of it, but your still just like every other member following all the same rules.

It can be owned by whoever, it should still listen to its users because without the users there is no forum. I like this forum a lot, there are some great people on here posting some really good stuff, but some of the things mods sting you for are a little soft and the outlines of the rules are vague.

Yeah, but the majority of people know how to post with a mature attitude and with a bit of respect. So just because a few bad elements decide to rebel, there's no need to set heaven and earth in motion to accommodate those few.

It's always 2-3 members whining about this subject because they received in their mind, an unfair warning eons ago. You will note however, the same members always have some witty insulting comment, a rebel attitude and like to test the boundaries of insulting members - And they are standing there with Bambi eyes like they are innocent.

So Neobond & Co. invited us into their 'home', we all sat down and had a drink while 2-3 people decided to jump around on the couch, they get told to sit down quietly and they start crying.

Well put.

And I'm sure Neobond has a lovely couch too. :D

i've had the complete opposite experience

while i try to keep all my comments respectful and non-personal, sometimes i might post something dicey and just figure the warn might be worth it to get my point across. however i haven't gotten a warning yet so the rules honestly can't be that bad. i did get warned once (in all the years i've been here) for insulting the author of an article, but the mods thought i was insulting a person. i discussed it with the mod (via PM, not the forum) and not only did they removed the warning, but they APOLOGIZED to me for the misunderstanding. you can't get better service than that

as for people "getting away" with stuff, perhaps no one has reported their comment? pretty much every time i report someone for personal attacks, it and the entire thread get cleaned within 30 minutes

"argue to understand, not to win" is one of my favorite quotes and it applies especially to forums. if you are arguing to understand, under NO circumstances should you ever be insulting in any way. if you start name calling or insulting people then you are just trying to win, which serves absolutely no purpose but to boost your ego. this forum isn't about your ego, it's about the community and about learning. be respectful. be happy (by not being banned :p )

huh, funny...If I said something like that I'd get a warning, I mean calling members crybabies is insulting, it is flaming, right?

and then Barney comes along and thumbsups it...uneven moderation once again.

well said, still some problems with that, especially on a forum.

Report it if you have a problem with it and don't think we are moderating correctly. There is a HUGE forum and only a certain number of us. Unfortunately we can't catch everything and sometimes it looks like we are approving comments which are clearly against the rules.

If you feel that something is wrong, report the moderator. Report the member...give the rest of us a way to find out what is going on! Don't just sit back and complain...it gets old...do something about it.

Sorry, it's just annoying hearing people complain when I NEVER see them report a thing. Report it...we'll try our best to get it fixed.

I don't think it is an issue about reporting. As many of the posters here have said; most moderators are turning blind eyes to certain threads or posts when in fact they got warned for the same thing.

I'm not here to complain, just an observation of reading this thread.

Report....the....moderator.

We try our best but we are human and make mistakes. At least if you see a mod breaking the rules, no matter their rank, it allows us to bring it up in a discussion and find out what happened.

I'm sure it won't be a popular opinion, but we ALL have to obey by the rules. If you see anyone breaking them, report them.

Now...I'm not saying this gives ANYONE the right to report them simply because you are ****ed off at them...but if I break the rules...report me. Maybe I didn't realize what I was doing, maybe someone else didn't realize it. Everyone will review it and find out what happened and why it happened.

I'm sorry...I have NO sympathy for members who complain that OTHERS broke a rule and didn't get in trouble for it when they decided not to report it in the first place. We cannot catch everything in this forum....it's HUGE.

The moderation here is superb. I've been caught out with a few warnings but hey, that's how we learn, right? If we do something inappropriate, we get told off, move on and don't do it again.

I'm surprised people can get to 60% warn, let alone 100%, and still feel like they haven't done anything wrong.

Things can be questioned, it's just how you go about it that matters.

Be respectful and calm, and you'll potentially get somewhere - Not always but, some things ARE just unquestionable.

However chuck your toys out your pram and act like a baby, and you'll potentially only worsen things.

This.

A few years back (Before I was a mod, or we even had a IRC server) I was warned for posting in a thread (bandwagon), I sent a PM about it and acted maturely and discussed it, and the warning was removed. I'm sure if I sent a PM calling the mod a nazi and a moron, it would have gone down differently.

We're human, we make mistakes, if you think we made a mistake PM one of us and discuss it maturely.

And report stuff, we aren't omnipresent :p This applies to the forums and IRC, with the IRC something might have happened while I was away from the computer and by the time I get back it's scrolled off my screen. If I don't go back and look for something I'll miss it, by reporting it it brings it to our attention and we can deal with it.

Here's a perfect example of poor moderation then. I've done the same thing and received the opposite treatment.

This is quite a humorous discussion.

From a PM,

Neowin requires that members respect the decision of moderators.

Threads and posts questioning the actions or decisions of forum moderations will be deleted on sight, and the appropriate action taken (up to and including forum bans) against the thread starter and/or participants. However, as a member you reserve the right to PM any moderator or administrator regarding action taken at Neowin.

Thank you for your understanding.

Joel

Supervisor

neowin.net

You guys aren't allowed to second guess mods decisions from my experience. No matter what. Even if you PM the mod about the warning you received from them and refute it, they will simply ignore it. (i.e. Joel)

So, from my previous experience with certain mods, I'm pretty sure half of the people here posting about moderation are going to get warnings now. Maybe even me. (AGAIN)

you can absolutely discuss it with the mod without recourse. if the mod seems rude and unresponsive to you, take it to a higher level and PM a global mod (or whatever the chain of command is)

and users wouldn't be getting warnings unless they are breaking the rules. you can respect something and talk about it. do you respect your parents and talk about them? yes. but arguing and discussing are two different things. so make sure to do the later when dealing with a mod

The problem is that sometimes the rules here are enforced, and sometimes they aren't, leaving a lot of uncertainty on if you are breaking the rules or not... Especially if what you are doing is borderline. Of course I am sure I will be told to not even come close to breaking the rules and I won't have to worry about it, but that's just against my principles.

I could care less about my warning level, it's as high as it's gonna get and I don't regret speaking my mind. I simply make sure that I am barely within the rules from now on, and if a mod decides to ban me for an infraction that does not go against the rules, then I won't feel bad since I was not in the wrong.

do you respect your parents and talk about them? yes.

thats probably not the best thing, lots of people don't have respect for their parents for certain reasons. Other than that I agree with your post, we should be able to talk about it maturely.

So I am curious, when you warned me for referring to Muslims as terrorists, is that really against the rules anywhere, because I can't find it, nor was it directed at any one member/person :p

Closed... this thread isn't about discussing previous warns you've received from staff... including posting PM's or insulting the staff member that warned you.

We have a very closed enviornment when it comes to member warns..

The jist of this thread:

1) We will contiune to keep member warns in private

2) If you have an issue w/ a mod... report them to a supervisor...

3) If you have an issue w/ a supervisor then PM another member of Staff

4) Don't publicly discuss warns.

5) PMing the moderator who warned you will allow for discussion on why you we warned so we can reach a resolution... you can also PM a supervisor regarding a warn you received from another staff member.
