Update on Shift

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Just an update on Shift. Bmaher has worked on modding Ubiquity so that we can install our packages from our own repo. This has taken a long time since no one really knows Python well. Anyways, the front end is done, and bmaher has also worked with the backend, getting that up to speed.

We have settled on most of the packages to offer, so we will get them in the distro as soon as the installer is complete. Mark Jensen has worked diligently with Shift Lite and has to brand it. Additionally, Mark has to sort out which packages will work with Fluxbox.

Here are the current picks for Shift One / Lite apps:

Avant Window Manager

Compiz / Compiz Fusion (maybe not for Lite)

Ndiswrapper

RIP

VLC Media Player

Cinelerra

screen

pidgin

mplayer

w32codecs-all

songbird

abiword

scribes

xchat

wicd (wireless support)

scite

conky

go-oo

mirage

xmms

k3b

gdesklets

xpdf

mac4lin (maybe)

.......and the usual "standard" most current Ubuntu packages and drivers. We'll need to make sure that these work for flux ( or not use them in that version).

We are also glad to have CrimsonRedMk here to help us get the repository up and running. We'll place it on our FTP server as soon as it returns on line (it was taken down when Neowin moved to it's new computers).

Cosmin has completed some walls and Max is working to complete his.

At this point, I am hoping that we will have a shiny new DVD and a companion CD (Lite version) out in a month or so.

There you have it. Thanks to everyone for their hard work.

Once I have the backend behaving itself, it should be pretty much plain sailing :). Once again, however, I apologise for the amount of time it's taken, however, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel now!

Why XPDF? Gnome has built-in reading and I assume Lite has something built-in too.

fluxbox wouldn't be "lite" if it included things like PDF viewers.

Alright, I didn't know about Fluxbox but in any case, Gnome shouldn't include it then.

Also, I offered Barney lots of server space for whatever you guys need. Hope you guys don't hate me too much!

Thanks for the offer for the server. We'll use it, I'm sure! And welcome back to the team. :)

Yeah my computer's power supply cooked everything attached to it, so I've been two weeks without a computer now, besides my EEE PC laptop. As soon as I get my new desktop, i'll finish up the walls. :)

Wallpapers are the very least of my concerns with Lite.

I have taken an Xubuntu image, updated it, added in a few packages (Gnumeric and Abiword), replaced a couple (OO.o comes to mind) and rebuilt it. I have tested it on an install on a spare old laptop I have lying around. But I have not actually customized it. It does not boot into fluxbox. It does not have shift branding.

Tell you what, I am very glad that CrimsonRedMk is back!

I've been meaning to get more involved again for a little while. Just tell me to do something and I'll try ;)

Thanks Simon. I appreciate the thoughts.....

We will need your expertise and theming knowledge soon.

If you need anyone to make a theme... I think I can do it. It's only some images and XML after all ;)

I'll read up on theming in the coming days. Get me a mockup and I'll start working ;)

Excellent! You're hired! The sky is the limit, as far as theming goes. Whatever looks good to you...... although we need to keep with the Shift colors, at this point! ;)

Installer is *very* much nearly there (i'm just doing the post-install stuff, which shouldn't take very long once I've figured out where Ubiquity is hiding the functions I need :p). Although I just made a programming-101 error and had to spend an hour looking for a missing colon :p

Would it be possible to devise a package list of what we want included (both default, and in the software selection screen. At the moment, I've laid it out like follows, however, the structure and categories can be easily changed (the four bold titles are on different tabs, and the user can choose which of the underlined categories are installed):

Default (Always Installed)

Productivity

Office Suite

- OOo, etc

CD/DVD Tools

Internet/FTP

Fun

Games

Enhancements

OS Enhancements[

Themes

Developers

Web Server

Compilers

Not the complete list obviously, but it gives you an idea of the structure :p

Like the one at the top of the page? :p

Sounds fabulous! I need to get with you on some developing plans!

I hate throwing suggestions around like wild, can someone point us to an idea/suggestion page/topic/something? The idea is to include lighttpd and have it on and ready and market it as a feature (very much like Apple's OS does).
