+Gary7 Subscriber² Posted September 13, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted September 13, 2008 Why is it that every skin I use is off center on my screen except the Shift Screen. There are allot of neat skins to use but I prefer them to be in the center.

Joel
They're old news now. Shift has been here for so long, I forgot what Swift looked like until this thread. Then they should be re designed. Because...?
Timan Veteran Posted September 13, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 13, 2008 Then they should be re designed. It can't be that hard to center them. Do you read left to right, or center to right? ;) Thats one skin I think is perfect, its an old design too, so it kinda pre-dates the whole centered look that pages use alot today. I read left to right but every web page or forum I belong to the page and or skin is centered on the screen. There is not a gap on the right. Now the skin that I use, Shift is centered but there is about a 3/4 inch gap on both sides of the screen. I just think that the skins would look better if at least it is centered and at best fills the entire screen like all IPB skins do. I am not a coder but I don't think it would take a great deal of effort to correct this. Would Neowin not want to look the best as well as be the best? p858snake
It's a old skin that is no longer supported so no point changing it really. And not all ip.b skins are centered.....
gigapixels Veteran Posted September 13, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 13, 2008 Would Neowin not want to look the best as well as be the best? And that's the issue: obviously when they were coming up with that design they believed that it looked best with the large right margin. Your opinion of what looks best differs from theirs. That's how they designed it and, frankly, it won't be changed now, especially since the skin is no longer supported.

I am talking about all of the skins. So none of them are supported? Thanks but I will wait for a Dev's reply. Going by what you posted, this section is useless. It was designed that way so it will stay that way. When all of the skins are off center, there is a problem. All IPB skins that I have ever seen are centered on the screen. what
IPB skins can be aligned any way you want them to be. The old Swift skins weren't aligned centrally. Just get over it.

Mouldy Punk
"Fix" would imply there is something that is broken and needs fixing. In the case of the skin, it is not broken. It is how it was intentionally designed. You're right, it would be simple for them to center it - but that's not what the devs wanted to do when they made the skin. There's an extension for firefox that allows you to modify sites' CSS so that it'll display on your screen how you want it to (not how the site devs want it to). I can't think of the name of it, but if the lack of central-alignment bothers you that much, you might want to see if you can find it.
NienorGT
The Devs have other things to do than care about a 5 year old skin...
DaveLegg Developer Posted September 13, 2008 Developer Share Posted September 13, 2008 I would like to hear from a Dev as to why they can't be fixed. They are not 'broken', they were designed like that, always have been like that, and always will be like that.
brentaal
You could try doing that with Greasemonkey.
Timan Veteran Posted September 13, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 13, 2008 If you want the margin gone, simply use one of those firefox plugins that allows for custom css per site, and use the following css. #wrapper { width: 100%; } See how broken the skin is, that one line of css will fix it. It was design this way.

+Gary7 Subscriber² Posted September 13, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted September 13, 2008 Let me repeat this again. The skin IS NOT broken. This is how it was designed. OK if a skin was designed with a flaw why can't it be re designed or why can't a new skin be developed that is designed to fill the screen. The Shift skin, I really do not have a problem with, it is the rest of them that are off center.

Not every site you visit in the world is centered, many of them will be aligned left, the swift skin being one of them. If you don't like the way the swift skin looks, simple, don't use it. Simon Veteran Posted September 13, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 13, 2008 We don't want to, therefore we won't. It's an old skin that barely anyone in the community uses, and those who do do purely for nostalgic value in many cases. Therefore, updating it would defeat its purpose. We have significantly more important things to worry about right now than changing the design on an old skin that was meant to be exactly the way it is. It's not a flaw, it's not an issue. It's design.

Fred Derf Veteran Posted September 13, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 13, 2008 OK if a skin was designed with a flaw why can't it be re designed or why can't a new skin be developed that is designed to fill the screen. The Shift skin, I really do not have a problem with, it is the rest of them that are off center. I think the point is that this issue might only be a flaw in your eyes. If we change it then we may find that we receive more complaints from the people who want it put back the way it was. Several years ago we decided that support for these skins would be discontinued. If enough people had asked for them to be centred before this point then we would have made the change but it seems that our members at the time must have preferred them to be left aligned. Perhaps they still do. The point is that we don't want to deal with the drama of finding out. If you have concerns with the Shift skins or if you have tips for future skins then we'd love to hear them. Those are the only skins that we really care about at this point in time. For the last few days, I've been using the Classic Swift skin just for the fun of it. It's day-glo!
