Unplayable disk xbox 360 elite

Recommended Posts

Today when I turned on my xbox 360, the drive made some grinding noises and now it is refusing to recognize any disks at all (games, movies, nothing).

It is an elite system bought last year and out of warranty. Any tips besides obvious pay MS and get fixed (or buy ps3 :p )?

Buy a Wii? :p

Anything you do will probably make the problem worse - maybe try and get the box to RROD so it is in warranty?

Did you do anything to cause the problem, such as knock the console as you walked past it or something?

Honestly...nothing. It has been in my entertainment center (well ventillated etc etc) for last 1 year or so.

Edit: It just scratched my GoW disk. :(

Looks to me like the DVD mechanism failed & someone might have done something otherwise they just don't break out of the blue. Exactly how long ago you bought it, as acxz said call MS and tell them it?s RRoD and see if they fix it for your (which is highly unlikely) and once they return call them again saying now you scratched your disk after they returned you 360.

If you're used to playing 360 then wii isn't your answer, PS3 maybe if you like the current collection of games and limited online play (PS3 doesn't have the same community as 360 yet). If you're really tired of 360 then you have very limited choice anyway.

There is no "someone" to do "something" to my xbox around here. :) Trust me, it just made bad noise and stopped working. It did recognize disks for few mins but ended up scratching it while making really bad noise. I bought it the week after elite was launched.

The PS3/Wii was a joke btw.

Wrap a damp towell around it and force an RROD so you can send it in for repair - you're still covered for that and they'll have to send it back working :p

other than that, you can pay a fee to MS to have your 360 repaired if you don't force an rrod, don't quote me I think it's something like ?70.

Microsoft fixed my 360 for free last time when my DVD drive gave out (no RRoD).

But yeah, forcing RRoD is probably your best option :p

Were you out of warranty when then fixed your DVD drive?

That won't force it to RROD at all. It'll cause it to overheat but it'll just carry on working again after it's cooled down. Sure, with enough heat you could eventually get it to warp the motherboard which will cause the broken solder joints and the RROD to happen, but that could take a hell of a lot of towel jobs. It's pointless and a waste of time.

Other than sending it off to MS you have only one option - fix it yourself. If you're willing, open the case (plenty of tutorials on the net about this) then find out what DVD drive you've got. Buy another one of the same model from ebay then when you get the replacement, just swap the circuit board over. This saves you having to mess around with extracting the key out of the old firmware then reflashing the new drive and you get a new drive mechanism. It's as simple as undoing a few screws and ribbon cable clips. As you say you got it when the Elites had just come out, the chances are it's a Hitachi 79 drive - a simple PCB swap will do the job :))

I was out of warranty when they fixed my DVD drive, I even asked them 3 times if its gonna cost me anything at all and the support person said no, no and no

Ok just to conclude, Microsoft will be charging me for fixing this. I think $50 is not a bad thing since I was almost 4 months out of warranty. They are tossing in one year of full warranty with it - which I think must be a standard affair for out of warranty repairs? I was quoted $110 initially but I managed to get them down.

In all, I am not complaining (besides it should not happen in first place). My elite is still running fine - except it can't play any disks. :p

dhan palomine, hope it was a joke because if it wasn't, i'll have me a new special project of interest *looks to toolshed* remember buffalo bill? goodbye horses? ;)

at any rate, sorry to hear, it's just one of those things. i'd say send her in and call it an RROD, i'm pretty sure they never check and won't check until your file shows 3 years...worse case you pay for a new drive, it'll still be nothing next to a new console.

do it quick bafore the holiday season releases kick in, i.e in a couple of weeks.

EDIT: sorry, didn't see your last post! well fifty buckadingdongs is nothing, so you're all good. how long will it take?

OK My disk Drive has recently stopped working. I have Spent about 2-3 hours calling the Xbox phone line. (1-800-4MY-XBOX) And I have asked them about cutting the price, since I don't have RROD. They told me no and that they can not do that b/c of their system. I have even sent an email to them And it is not helping. What did you do to cut down the price of the repair? They are telling me with my Xbox being out of warranty, that it will cost me $100.

HELP!?! =[

I was extra polite and spoke with a Manager. I told them that I am a loyal customer, I have this top of the line elite system etc. I guess I was just lucky. In the end, they actually didn't fix my elite but send me a brand new one. YMMV in such cases. Good luck.

Just say it has a RROD intermittently and return it. They won't even check it out most times, but if you've called support and been complaining its probably going to throw a red flag.

I know for a fact MS either barely check the returned units, or they don't check them at all. I have multiple friends who have returned MODDED 360's with the MS sticker noticeably worn off of the interior case and with the ixtreme firmware still installed, guess what...MS replaced the units without so much of a mention of the clearly opened units and their non-stock firmware.

I assure you this is 100% truth, I know 3 separate people who have done it.
