Shift Lite Thread

Recommended Posts

The concept of Shift Lite has changed a bit since it's first inception. Currently we are looking at creating a lite OS that would work well with netbooks. Included in the OS would be apps that would be advantageous for work with the net and for net app development. Included would be such things as adding Google utilities, useful links, RSS feeds, and such. One of the apps we were looking at was Prism ( http://people.mozilla.com/~mfinkle/prism/p...x-i686.tar.bz2) as well as using Chrome, once it is released for Linux.

Mark Jensen is currently heading up this development, but he should not work in a vacuum. Please post ideas so that we can make this an awesome OS.

Just read the logs this morning. I haven't heard of Prism before, either, but the concept of it looks like a physical manifestation of part of what Google's Chrome browser is doing. Google Chrome basically is an application-running beast disguised as a mere "web browser". Prism lets you split off a web app and present it to the user as if it were a stand-alone.

I guess that this means removing the stand-alone Abiword, Gnumeric and Thunderbird type apps in favor of their Google Docs and email service? Does anyone here use the Neowin custom email address provided for all members? I signed up with it when it was first announced by the Admins, but it seem that the account (which I never used) is now saying it is disabled and wants me to update to the new "Live", but when I tell it to do so, it just puts me back at the screen saying my account is currently disabled. :ermm:

But it is a Neowin-specific feature, and one that I suppose can be added as part of Shift Lite for netbooks.

So, are we dropping a bunch of stand-alones in favor of web apps? Picassa/Flickr/Adobe Photoshop Express for online photos? I don't do any online photo tasks, so this entire area is unfamiliar to me, so if anyone has recommendations, it would be great! I guess all three could be added.

^ Hey Mark,

I think we should keep the best of our standalone apps and add additional ones that enhance the netbook features of Lite. A would think that Abiword is a vital app that most users would want. I would also like to add th e Neowin homepage as Firefox (or Iceweasel) opens, and add RSS feeds. The Neowin mailbox.... maybe I should ask Dave Legg or Steve about that one.

Also check out our Themes thread. We have some developments on that area. I would also like your take on our new Open Invitation Network status...... :) https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=667982

What is your e-mail address on there? I can go in to the management side on Windows Live and see if there is anything wrong with your account.
