draklord22
I tried and tried to find out how to properly use Resource Hacker to replace the windows XP logonui.exe file with a custom one so that the logon screen shows the custom one. Seriously there is no answer to this. I looked at lots of sites, some just say resource hacker can change your files such as blah blah.. but HOW? I can't find any information in replacing your logonui.exe file. Some sites say you need to edit this and that and replace this bitmap image and this and that... there's no simple way to do it. I don't have 24/7 to go on the computer. I don't know why everything has to be so complicated. I went into ResHacker, and opened a file (the custom logonui.exe file). Then I clicked on Action and clicked "Replace other Resource", and attempted to replace the existing windows xp logonui.exe in C:\WINDOWS\System32. I logged off the computer and the logon screen was just black with a box to type your user and pw in. I tried changing it back the same way replacing the new one with the old default xp logonui.exe because I backed it up before I did anything. The screen is still black. Please, anyone familiar with Resource Hacker please tell me how on earth you change it back.. thanks
dis
no no. reshacker isnt for replacing system files . it is for replacing resources (text, bitmaps, icons, etc) within the dll or exe files. here is a little tutorial: http://www.askvg.com/tutorial-all-about-re...brief-tutorial/ to replace the altered logonui.exe (that you have altered with reshacker) you need to use replacer. www3.telus.net/_/replacer/ . it';s a tiny command prompt app that allows you to replace the protected* system file. *windows protects the files being replaced by other files *another solution if you delete (or temporary move it to another folder) all the files inside system32/dllcache folder, then you can overwrite the logonui.exe. (if the logon screen is black with a dialog in center (classic logon type), that means your logonui.exe failed (corrupted or something) to load or it doesn't exist. or your logon settings changed in nusrmgr.cpl > "change the way users log on or off" > use the welcome screen) Edited September 15, 2008 by dis
cooky560 Veteran Posted September 16, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 16, 2008 what happens if I put the replaced version into dllcache, then delete the original?
dreamz Veteran Posted September 16, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 16, 2008 if you have windows file protection enabled, xp may copy the hacked file from the dllcache to the original location, but i'm not certain. the best way is to use replacer, as dis said. _dandy_
You're willing to hack system files and completely corrupt your system to, what, display different icons and bitmaps? No offense, but until you know what you're doing, I hope you're just tinkering with this in a VM...
