Skulltrail-old
So I just got back from a huge party, and at the party there was a desktop. I went on it to check my e-mails, in hopes that my colleague replied, which he did. While using the computer, I noticed it was rather fast; in every aspect. The start menu opened almost instantly, no lag whatsoever in opening IE (Internet Explorer). Me being the geek I always been, I just had to check the system's specs. (START > Right-click on COMPUTER > Properties) Apparently it is a Intel Core 2 Duo T##### (not sure on the model of the CPU) and next to it, 1.70GHz. Under it said 2.0GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7150, Windows Vista Home Premium. Now here's my point, my computer has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ at a clock speed of 2.00GHz (sometimes I overclock), 2.5GB of RAM, an 8500GT with 1023MB (256MB physical, 767MB shared apparently). How can this computer be running so quickly? I recently formatted my computer after serious problems logging in to my main user account, "Jay." I was sure to backup everything through the temporary account before formatting. So my question is, how is this computer running flawlessly and mine doesn't? I have many maintenance software like TuneUp Utilities 2008, Auslogics Boostspeed, and Vista Manager (trial) yet my computer isn't as powerful as this slightly lighter (in specs) computer. My first guess is AMD's "innovative" Cool'n'Quiet feature. I have yet to find a way to disable and find out if that is what causes this inevitable quick lag. Help me out please. Japlabot
Are they both using Windows Vista? SP1 or not? Same Theme? Also an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ would be rated less than any Core 2 Duo. The Core 2 Duo was probably underclocked at the time too (Dynamic frequency scaling) as I don't know of any C2D's that are rated at 1.7GHz. The C2D is a generation ahead of the Athlon 64 X2, remember it's not all about Gigahertz. This is probably the problem more than anything.
Harreh
His system could be configured differently, different drivers, etc. He could have different visual settings. Kinda hard to say without actually looking at both of the computers. I'm not much of a fan with these "Clean up" tools when it comes to Vista myself. I used to run CCleaner quite often back on XP but now I just don't use it. Vista itself is a pretty good manager imo.
Max Veteran Posted September 21, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 21, 2008 You've probably got a lot of processes running. Press control, alt, delete to bring up the task manager and tell us how many you have running. I'm running 36 processes (incl this Internet explorer window) Vista Ultimate on a P4 3Ghz and everything is snappy.

I doubt it's a Phenom, mostly because it is a 3-4 core processor which wouldn't be a fair comparison. Perhaps, and I do understand the clock speed isn't everything. The technology of it is also a huge factor in performance; cache, number of cores, features, etc.
Dc'1
You probably have a lot of different processes running, maybe using more RAM. Having all they cleanup tools on Vista can't be very helpful either. Maybe uninstalling some of them could help.

Skulltrail-old
Or, well, all of them. Do these optimizing applications really cause problems? Their purposes oppose that. :p
Quillz
The only "cleanup" tools I hang onto are CCleaner and Tuneup Utilities, and only because those two can clear out old Registry keys.
Harreh
Keep Tuneup Utilities if you want, but having all of them seems overkill imo. But as I said I don't even use CCleaner anymore, I just uninstalled it yesterday actually.
tsupersonic
Your AMD X2 3800+ was the first generation of AMD dual core processors. That Intel competitor (at the time) was Pentium-D. So, like someone said, your processor is generation behind the Core 2 Duo. The AMD equivalent of Core 2 Duo is the Athlon x2 series, but they are up to 6400+, which is 3.2GHz stock. Just keep in mind, clock speed doesn't mean much unless you're comparing the same group of processors. For ex: a Core 2 Duo E8400 vs a Core 2 Duo E8500. There are so many factors why their computer seemed faster. The configuration, for one, makes a big difference. The software, makes a big difference. But, does your stsrt menu not pop up instantly? Maybe the internet seemed faster because he has a faster ISP package compared to you. You could try to see if you can disable the cool n' quiet in the BIOS. If not, set your power options to Always on (XP) or High Performance (Vista)
