Jerry Grey Member Posted September 22, 2008 Member Share Posted September 22, 2008 Hey Guys, This is my first time with Linux so bear with me, I have installed Ubuntu (latest) on my laptop, and I started using for a while no problems but when I did the updates and remove some apps and restarted I found I didn't get the top and bottom bars (start menu?) anymore... Is there a chance someone can help me out of my little problem? :) Thanks
tareqsiraj
On a terminal (press alt+f2 then type "gnome-terminal") type "gnome-panel". See if it brings the bars or says something on the terminal. Hope this helps.

Thanks, that did the job. :) I found out that things a missing from it including panels, which I had to "install", is there a way to make it go back with the default programs etc without reinstalling Ubuntu again? :)
markwolfe Veteran Posted September 22, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 22, 2008 I'm not a gnome expert, but in general, you can safely remove your "dot" config file and the app that uses it will set it up again with default values (if only the Windows registry would do this, but that is wishful thinking from a personal experience here at work). Actually, instead of removing it, just move the file, like mv .config_file_or_dir .config_file_or_dir-bak so you can go back and compare or restore your current setup. Did you have to install any package for it or just add applets to the panel? Try the approach mark suggested (that usually does the trick to get things to default). If you have missing packages, you might try to install the 'gnome-panel-data' package and see if it fixes it. :)
