DaDude
I have a pre-installed Vista machine. I wanted to install Wubi so I can try Ubuntu out without having to partition my HD. When installation was finished, I had booting problems, however, I found out what was causing it. I had to go to System Setup and change the SATA from IDE to RAID. However, when I change that setup, Ubuntu boots fine, but not Vista. So, I have to keep changing that setup when I want to switch OS. In other words, Ubuntu wants RAID while Vista wants IDE. How can I fix this IDE/RAID conflict?
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted September 23, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 23, 2008 Vista works fine with RAID/AHCI, but it needs to be set to that option before you install Vista, changing it afterwards just causes Windows to crash. I can see it causing an issue, so maybe it'd be better for you to run Ubuntu inside a virtual machine instead (with something like VirtualBox)
redvamp128
You could try Microsoft Virtual PC 2007SP1 it is free download- And with your machine specs you could allow 256mb for Ubuntu- And make a 6gig Virtual System.... I also suggested Puppy Linux 4.0 (it fits comfortable on a 2gig VHD) and works with 128mb. redvamp128
The only other solution is Virtual Box- http://www.virtualbox.org/ It runs very well under XP but have not tested under Vista. It also runs great under Ubuntu. I ran Puppy Linux using- "Retro"iso using VPC2007SP1. The only thing I can remember doing is the install with using-- the .iso as the image and not the cd drive itself. That and the partition I put Ubuntu on in VPC2007SP1 I used Puppy LInux live CD to Fdisk the drive and Gparted to format it to EXT3. Before I installed Ubuntu. The_Decryptor Veteran Posted September 24, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 24, 2008 I'm using it under Vista to run Ubuntu, it works great.
DaDude
After some research, I read that some people have less problems with earlier version of Linux. So, does anybody know if this same issue I'm having will occur in earlier version of Ubuntu? Can they run on IDE mode?
markwolfe Veteran Posted September 26, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 26, 2008 Current Version + Manually Applied Fix > Older Version I would strongly advise against using old releases to work around an issue. Old versions of Linux (just like Windows) are missing important security improvements/fixes and have less features. It can't hurt to try it, if you like. But in general, I will always advise to apply a fix to a current release instead of using an old 6.10 or such version.

I heard 7.10 works with IDE so that might be worth a try.
markwolfe Veteran Posted September 26, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 26, 2008 Any other way? Like changing your BIOS setting and fixing Vista to work with it? Or Leaving BIOS like it is and manually applying the fix to Ubuntu? Seems like two other (and very valid) "ways" are presented.

Vista has to be reinstalled for it to work with RAID and that's too much work. I tried applying that fix to Ubuntu, it doesn't work. I think that fix is applied to another problem that happens to look similar to mine.
DaDude
I tried Ubuntu 7.10 and it works. Looks like it's just an issue with the new version
