GiganticSquirrel
Hi There!!! I'm a graphic designer/ conceptual artist who enjoys political and social discussion / humor / debate. I was temporarily banned for a second time from another site after 825 posts and forming numerous relationships. These were the offenses: 1. I was displaying what I call forumn art in which I would PERIODICALLY display fonts and emoticons of different sizes in an unorthodox manner. What I didn't realize until after a 3 day ban was implemented was that displays on my 24" screen were coming out jumbled on smaller screens. 2. I stopped displaying forumn art, which I felt was a kind of sad because I was pushing the envelope of conceptual art in cyberland. So I transferred my need for PERIODIC creative text and formatting to commercial type graphic display only. One particular member who had become a moderator ( after constantly losing to me in debate  ) banned me, claiming that I was violating an ambiguous rule for excessive use of vbcode. He refused to define or even generalize what excessive was and got an administrator to ban me for "defiance of authority" for asking. I felt it was an insult to artists and graphic designers in general. Example: The Charles Gibson Interviews with Sarah Palin :p url attached I am not doing this formatting to annoy but rather to display information so it gains attention in a "graphically professional way." I don't see a rule here against this sort of thing. Can a moderator perhaps clarify if this could be an issue in the future? Note on my avatar: Unknown photographer. Rob Veteran Posted September 23, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 23, 2008 I don't believe there is any particular rule against this kind of formatting but you must understand that many people, myself included, find it exceptionally irritating. I would recommend that you don't do it because people probably won't appreciate it in the 'graphically professional way' of which you suggest. Just a suggestion. Would 'many' in your estimation be a minority... a majority. I'm not trying to be argumentative but am curious about the 'non-artisan' perspective. The complaint I was getting from this person, who strictly confined himself to #2 standard black text, was that it was difficult to cut up my quotes during debates even though he was a well trained IT. Nobody else had actually said it was irritating... let alone exceptionally irritating. ( HELP! I feel a new inferiority complex coming on  ... Where's my medication? )
Rob Veteran Posted September 24, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 24, 2008 Interesting. Would 'many' in your estimation be a minority... a majority. Nobody else had actually said it was irritating... let alone exceptionally irritating. ( HELP! I feel a new inferiority complex coming on  ... Where's my medication? ) Most forums, including this one, are by their nature designed for text-based discussion in the form of a running thread. By your own admission, the use of non-standard text that deviates from the established convention of our base of members serves the purpose of gaining attention. Indeed, in typography emboldened and italic text is designed for exactly this - gaining attention. However my point is that the overuse (a relative term you should take to mean 'beyond established convention') of such formatting only serves to alienate other members who are used to the way things are done here. The worthiness of the content of your posts should negate the need for anything but the most basic of formatting. In short, it's the convention here and rightly or wrongly people won't appreciate you messing with formatting. As a sidenote, the above post showcases a widely-accepted form of emphasis that does not break the eyeline of the user as they traverse the sentence. Thanks Rob for your honest input. Bolding out a partial or whole sentence as you have done in your example is usually all I will do. To reiterate, my more 'graphic ' formatting is somewhat infrequent. Please let me know if anything I do exceptionally irritates you ( If you believe Sarah Palin would make a fine PROTUS, hopefully everything I do will irritate you :p ) Please consider in your assessments that I am a sign maker from the old school of hand lettering... when they called us signpainters ( 27 years ). Letter and word sizing, spacing etc. is somewhat of a compulsion at this point.

GiganticSquirrel
Thanks for the welcomes. After spending a little time here... Well, quite frankly... Neowin's G-R- R- R - EAT !!! Looks like the formatting code doesn't even come up in the original reply boxes. So formatting shouldn't really be an issue to other members and perhaps why there aren't rules about it like a lot of other message boards. It seems that people here are quite respectfully tolerant of other's expression ( :spell: ). There are some REALLY creative posters here: The '8 million' thread was a blast while it lasted. https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=635486 Special nods to Gary, Rappy and Brentaal... they put a lot of time and energy into that... and to all of the contributors over there. I still have to go over that thread as it was VERY entertaining. Some terrific discussions over on the News threads... what an election time this is ! I'm really into UFOs and science as well. Thanks to Neobond and the other creators of Neowin... You guys ROCK !!! .
