Fixing Windows Aero

Recommended Posts

When I first got my computer, I tweaked the heck out of it,for performance. After all of that, Aero was still working, and looking great. It wasn't until I ventured into custom themes that I ran into some problems...

Here's my computer:

Vista Home Premium 32bit on Intel Inspiron 1525 with lots of tweaks (some services disabled, etc)

Ok, so here's what I did:

1. Installed Vistaglazz and patched my files

2. My theme went nuts, so I System Restored back to when I installed Vistaglazz

3. I patched my 3 dll files with seperate files, still couldn't get Aero back

4. I installed Vistaglazz AGAIN to unpatch, still don't have it on the list

I still have the theme, but I don't know what's wrong:

Is there a way to get Aero back without the Vista CD?

Easiest way: Get a disk, run sfc /scannow.

Another easy way: Go to the backups that you made before employing tweaks (if you were smart about it) and restore those.

Another way: If you have Business or Ultimate edition, use the Previous Versions feature to restore your system files.

Really, it could be a complex problem, depending on what tweaks you've used.

Try this;

Right click on the desktop, select Personalize.

Click on Themes and select the default Windows Vista themes.

Next, in Windows Color & Appearance, ensure that Enable Transparency is checked.

Also ensure that 'Desktop Windows Manager' Service is set on Automatic.

Now, inspite of this, you still find that Aero does not work, or your Aero has stopped working, simply copy-paste the following command in Vista Start Menus Search Box, and hit Enter.

rundll32.exe Dwmapi.dll,DwmEnableComposition

Hope it helps.

Another helpful lesson, dont install vistaglazz, it's crap and isn't compatible with SP1.

There is a beta version of Vistaglazz that actually works with SP1.

Really? Ive been using VistaGlazz pre-SP1 and have been using the newer beta version post-SP1 without a problem.

Doing it manually requires you to boot into safe mode, take ownership of three files by playing around with its permissions (or using this registry tweak to do it in one shot), then overwrite the files. Compare that to clicking "Patch," then "Restart."

It does not require you to boot into safemode, and you could just as well get the context menu mod, that adds take ownership.. big deal, its useful to have at all times

I some times run into these issues, the way i solve it is to go into C:\windows\resources\themes and then double click on "aero". It will bring up a theme box, where u can click apply and hopefully u will get your aero back, atleast i got it back this way :p

I tried sfc /scannow off of the disk, but it didn't load. It did load on Vista's cmd.exe, but after I ran it and restarted, still nothing. The system restore doesn't go back that far.

HAHAHAHAH

I AM SO SORRY

I had the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager disabled

Hahahaa, I apologize, it had nothing to do with Vistaglazz

Aero is working now, thank you all anyway
