medium_pimpin
"Several common Linux distributions include OpenLDAP Software for LDAP support. The software also runs on BSD-variants, as well as AIX, HP-UX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Microsoft Windows (2000, XP), and z/OS."
Budious
I'm not an expert on LDAP but it has essentially the same base features of NT 4.0 directory services (not Active Directory) and some features of it's own. Therefore, when you do deploy it on a network Windows clients will identify it as NT 4.9 for compatibility.
ehlo
Indeed you can use it for basic authentication but AFAIK you cannot do Group Policy or software distribution
