fix-this!
i have a hp laptop and i know the wireless works but i have a switch on the front of the laptop with an indicator light for when it's on & off "blue for on and orange for off". is there a way to get this light to work instead of always saying its off when it is not ?
Elv13
You can try to google that, someone may have done a patch, hp also have good reputation for linux support, but do not have too mush hope. If the light is not directly connected to the on/off circuit of the wireless adapter, then it is driven by the HP software in windows. It may be listed in /proc or /dev (as an USB device like on Mac) but I don't think. Even if it is the case, you would have to turn it on and off manually or do some dirty hack to make it work (if no one else has done it before). fix-this!
i have posted a bug on launchpad, posted a thread on ubuntu forums and still no help. i searched the net and it seems alot of laptops have this issue but there are fixes for some of them. i can't find a specific fix for my hp laptop. my wireless works with madwifi but the toggle switch led doesn't change colors and the switch itself doesn't appear to work at all. here are my specs : HP Pavilion dv6809wm Entertainment Notebook : AMD Turion 64X2 2.0GHz. Nvidia Geforce 7150m 3GB DDR2 Ram 120GB Hard Drive Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g
bishy
Hi, I think you may have the same type of problem that I had. When 'upgraded' my laptop from Vista to XP a similar thing happened, I fixed it by reflashing the bios from a specific Vista one to a specific XP one. this sorted the problem. BTW I found the correct bios for the operating system on the laptop manufacturers website (in my case Toshiba). Maybe you can also find a bios upgrade for Linux on your manufacturers site (most are flashable from within Windows these days, so are quite easy to use). Hope that this is of some help. bishy. Elv13
MadWifi is outdated and dead, it have been replaced by ath5k and 9k. Both will be in Ubuntu 8.10 in 3 week (assuming it is the distribution you use). But it is not likely to fix your problem. The Atheros chip does not support led (I had 5 of them with 5 different way to enable/disable them, including physical switch), it is not manager by the driver (I can't confirm this). It mean that it is managed by something else. I suggest this: stop thinking about it, it is almost (for now) hopeless.
tsupersonic
I kind of have a similar issue. I have an HP/Compaq laptop and the wireless lights up when the radio is on, and turns off when not in use. My issue is with the mute button. It's supposed to glow orange when it's mute, and it doesn't.

tsupersonic
There is a bug report for Intel based WiFi chipsets. There's results on your chipset if you search, sorry don't have more time to follow up.
