Ubuntu is slow as hell

Recommended Posts

My mother have a very old computer with 900mhz Celeron, 256mb of ram, 20gb HD. I installed in her computer Ubuntu 8.04 from Windows 2000, because it appears that her computer was hacked with a virus or spyware. Anyway, Ubuntu performance is terrible, I disabled all effects and even without any effects run more slow than Windows 2000. I could upgrade her ram but her computer is so old that buying ram will be useless. Does anyone knoe if Ubuntu have some kind of tweak to improve performance? Thanks

ubuntu is a the motherbloat of all linux distro's seriously, ubuntu is Vista for people who cant afford it / want to be linux geeks but cant manage to.

try mandriva linux(i might spellt it wrong)

or, go to distrowatch(google it) and take the test.

The Celery processors are slow as hell.

Disable services that you don't need in System>Administration>Services

I'm guessing there's probably no Bluetooth on the laptop.

Ubuntu is closer to Vista than XP. If you would not consider Vista on a box, then Ubuntu with Gnome may also be a bit heavy.

Xubuntu would be a better choice, in my opinion.

While I love fluxbox, I would not put it on my mother's PC. Xubuntu is still modern, but uses XFCE as a window manager instead of Gnome.

You must be on something. Celeron processors are decent CPUs, they don't compare to modern processors but they can run Windows XP perfectly. I had a Celeron D processor once, good pup. Worked like I wanted it to, no problems.

@OP: Why would you leave Windows 2000 for Ubuntu?! W2k is wayy better. Maybe not as pretty but it performs decently; especially for the relic of a computer you have. GO BACK!

Can I switch ubuntu 8.10 to xubuntu 8.10? any tips how to do it?

If you go into the synaptic Manager and search for xubuntu desktop, you can probably change it that way.

Yeah, I was just clarifying that Ubuntu contains Gnome, whereas Xubuntu substitutes Gnome with XFCE.

When people just start, they don't realize that Ubuntu is a Gnome distro.

Yeah in my experience any full-gnome distro feels less responsive than vista or xp. I really like gnome and the way it's laid out but it is pretty slow for some reason. Even on my gaming desktop, whether I have compiz enabled or not vista just seems much more responsive. Same goes for kde in my experience which was even worse. XFCE however is lightning fast and very responsive even on older pc's. I used xbuntu on an old pIII machine and it was pretty fast.

agreed. even with my old pentium III desktop, xubuntu works like a charm.

ubuntu is kinda a bloat, its system requirements are higher when compared to xubuntu.

good to hear that your problem has been solved mate. :)
