Tekken 6 smacking Xbox 360

Namco Bandai kicks off Tokyo Game Show with confirmation that long-awaited PS3 fighter will launch on rival console simultaneously in fall 2009.

The current generation of consoles has seen a number of longtime exclusive third-party games migrate to multiplatform releases. The Devil May Cry franchise was a Sony exclusive brand until the fourth installment debuted on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII has also shed its exclusivity and will be appearing (in the West at least) simultaneously on Microsoft's and Sony's platforms.

Now, one more once-stalwart Sony exclusive has gone multiplatform, as Namco Bandai today opened up the 2008 Tokyo Game Show by revealing its arcade fighter Tekken 6 would be launching worldwide for the Xbox 360 in fall 2009, simultaneously with the previously announced PS3 edition. The Xbox 360 version of the game will mark the Tekken series' first installment on a non-Sony system since the 2002 Game Boy Advance experiment Tekken Advance.

Tekken project director Katsuhiro Harada--in an exclusive interview with GameSpot--said taking the Tekken series to more platforms would allow even more fans to enjoy the franchise.

"Timing was an important factor in this decision. As you have the 360 and the PS3--both relatively high-powered platforms--out at the same time frames. Both of them have high 3D specifications. And since Tekken is most famous for its graphics and visual design as a 3D fighter, we felt the high specs of these machines lend themselves very well to having the game on both consoles," he said.

Harada admits there will be challenges in taking Tekken 6 to the 360, given that the original arcade version was built on a PS3-based architecture. "When we tried to move it to the 360, it would be a lie to say I wasn't concerned. It is quite difficult. For example, on the PS3 you have the Blu-ray disc as well as the hard disk, which lends itself to a lot of options for the game. We don't necessarily have this for the 360, where it has a DVD and it may not have a hard disk by default. So there are various things that we have to overcome when porting this to the 360, but I'm sure we can do it," he said.

Tekken 6 will include a number of new characters which Namco Bandai said will result in the largest roster the series has seen to date. The game also expands on the way character customizability has been used in previous Tekken titles, with special items affecting gameplay and allowing new moves to be performed. The console versions of the arcade brawler will also feature online play.

This is just the latest example of Namco Bandai opening up its premiere franchises to multiplatform development. Xbox 360 launch title Ridge Racer 6 marked that series' first non-Sony console appearance since 2000's Ridge Racer 64, while Ace Combat had only flown the Sony skies on consoles before Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation launched on the 360 last year. The Namco Bandai multiplatform flow goes the other way as well; last year's Xbox 360 role-playing game Eternal Sonata debuts on the PS3 later this month.

Loved that game  , played it so much on my PS1 until the disk got scratched

There are noticeable different fighting styles, can't say that for DOA

And like any modern fighting game there will be gravity defiant - havok powered boobies for sure

So I can safely assume that if say for example Xbox 360 lost an exclusive you would be just as happy?

I mean you would have to be or that would make you a fan- Never mind :hmmm:

It did lose an exclusive, that game was Bioshock and we all know what happened to that don't we?

I was just saying its good for Namco to develop on both consoles since PS3 exclusive isn't exactly a preferred option (or at least not anymore for various reasons like the Playstation brand has been in the past.)

The 360 is cheaper for a start so people without a PS3 can play Tekken 6 if they have a 360.

I have both a 360 and PS3 and i will not buy T6 on either because the game does indeed suck compared to DOA.

No, because I haven't played it yet, and neither has anyone else.

I actually like DOA more than Tekken, even though I've been playing it for so long. Don't ask me why though, it's just something about the moves in DOA, as I had no problem launching a combo while I struggle with Tekken's combo moves. Or maybe I'm just a bad gamer :p .

Sorry, but I think the current gaming market and the current financial situation, it would be stupid not to release this game on both consoles.

You say "I did" like you personally lost the exclusive?

Please explain to me why it is a bad thing or a feeling of you "losing" something if another gamer much like yourself gets to play a great game? Are you so selfish that you would not want someone else to have the experience you did? And if so what is the logic behind that?

I realise that its good to have competition and that can only mean better games for us but you take it personally when Microsoft lose an exclusive and are happy when the same happens to Sony?

I am sorry if I seem like I'm picking on you but I absolutely fail to see the logic here?

Isn't that type of thinking that resides at the CORE of Fanboyism?

Good questions, I agree.

Competition is good, it's where you get things like Halo, MGS, LBP, GoW helping consoles do well and spurring on the competition. Games like those going multiplatform, you can see potential in there being distaste in the gaming community.

It's like Man Utd selling Ronaldo to Liverpool - Could happen and it's not "illegal" to do so, but it's a great iconic figure from one club going to a rival. It's going to upset fans, it's going to "taint" the clubs somewhat, etc.

However with games that really aren't hedged as a console mascot/heavily tied to a console, why not let other gamers experience the games?

Why get angry/distasteful if they go multiplatform?

In getting angry/making a fuss out of it, that really must be leading down the path of core fanboyism.

In some cases it angers (Orange Box), where the multiplatform game doesn't do justice on all platforms, but those that do, why not be happy more gamers can enjoy?

We plain and simply play in a gaming community now where 3rd party is all about multiplatform. It's better for us all, or we'd have another PS2 era. I mean hey, don't get me wrong, I loved the PS2, but this generation has shown me how much more beneficial competition is, and how much I'd fear a one console market again.

Sony do some things better than MS/Nintendo, MS do some things better than Sony/Nintendo, and Nintendo do some things better than Sony/MS. Without the balanced competition we have in this market, they wouldn't all be fighting to add features, "copy" and add more polish to competitors features, price cut as viciously, throw bundles at us etc.

If we only had one dominant console again, that company could do whatever the **** they wanted, at really whatever pace they wanted.

I don't want that, I like it the way we have it - For that to continue though, we need multiplatform games, and good competition all round. So stop being so stingy over "losing" exclusives that aren't really the mascot/console image branding titles :p

For everyone who does the rounds with the "your console has no good games", "i want this console to fail", etc, ask yourself, do you really think/want that? Logic shows me the competition is good

And finally, exclusives will be born out of 1st party/2nd party and of course, still some 3rd party. They're not going anywhere, don't worry.

/rant hat off.
