Half-Life 2: Episode Three Not Coming out for a While

Recommended Posts

Starting over on a new engine would take more time than using their current engine, and there's no reason to scrap their current engine as it's working fine for them.

I didn't say scrap anything, I merely said that this "6 year" figure Valve throw around so liberally was because they built an engine back then. If after HL2 they had built another full scale game using Source again it shouldn't have taken anywhere near as long.

To be honest I think Valve just quotes that 6 year number because they feel its a convenient way to justify the shorter releases. Fact is if they had spent less time on the tech side and hadn't had things like source leaks interfering they probably could have done it alot quicker like other developers. Should a time come where Source ceases to be adequate perhaps they could consider licensing a new engine.

I rather they take their time and release a polish game than rush it out to the market full of bugs. Patience is a virtue and I trust Valve very much considering what they've done with Steam and The Orange Box.

I would eat a hat if Duke Nukem Forever would be released before HL2 EP3.

You mean the one you're wearing  :p ?

I'm willing to wait as long as needed (within reason) for Ep. 3 as long as it meets the quality set forth by the HL2 and the rest of the episodes. :D Between new versions of Fakefactory's Cinematic Mods being released regularly and the eventual release of Black Mesa Source, there's plenty of HL goodness coming along, not to mention other games not related to HL2. :)

I think a longer delay will help prolong half lifes 'life'? Sure it will never truly die, but extending the release by a year or so, can only be a good thing for Valve.

Aw damn.

Ah well, as long as it's a really good episode when it finally comes out, I'll be prepared to wait a little while.

I'm not exactly sure how the logic here works. Why not delay it 10 years then? Maybe thats what Duke Nukem Forever is about...prolonging the games release in order to strengthen the franchise.

Eh. Gives me time to work on Ep 1 and Ep 2. I started on Ep 1 after getting The Orange Box and working my way through HL 2 again, but Ep 1 stalled because I was also working on beating SP modes of 3 or 4 other games (despite the fact that for all of them except GTA4, I'd beaten them before, just not for a while). I should get on the episodes again though. HL2 is a great series.

Having beaten Ep1 and 2 since that post, I'd like to rescind that statement and join in the 'Damn that's a long time, but at least it will probably be really good' bandwagon :p

Just IMO, but I actually love the episodic (Valve way, at least) length of games. Same with Crysis Warhead. I'd rather play more games with that length (and price) because it keeps my attention.

I must agree. As big of a fan that I am of games like Mass Effect and Final Fantasy, I have a tough time finishing them because I just can't stick with it long enough.

Give me quick, episodic content, and I'll be all over it.

Good things come to those that wait...

And FTR I am still waiting on a new Counter Strike.

Holy thread resurrection batman!

Nope, no more news.

L4D2, what a kick in the pants. Valve's looking to cash cow more than look after their existing fan base it seems.

Remember their 'promise'? "Episodic content, smaller, cheaper and released more frequently". HAH!

Obviously episodic concept is not very satisfying for people. You still end up waiting year or two, and what you get is 4-6 hours of gameplay.

I hope they use all that time to adapt Source to rendering large areas effectively. I'm sick of loading screens every 5 minutes.

The quality worths it. The Episodes, specially the second one, are great.

+1 Value gets the free pass. It's about quality and they won't release until its ready. They have raised the bar in the past and looking forward to the release.

Half-Life 2 was released in November 2004. Half-Life 2: Episode One, June 2006. And Half-Life 2: Episode Two, October 2007. It's already June 2009 and Valve still hasn't released Half-Life 2: Episode Three. For an episode, it's taking longer than one would expect. It's already approaching 2 years since the release of the last episode. That's longer than it took to release the first episode after the game's original release. I certainly hope it's worth the wait.

Might play EP1/EP2 again, waiting so long .... I hope EP3 goes all out.

Radish?
