Constructive criticism for the new front page

Recommended Posts

I have just seen the new main page, in general I love it... it?s a fresh new look, good colours, icons and I think the new navbar at the top very nice. I really do like the new graphics in use.

I also have a few concerns, after getting over the nice surprise of the new layout, I can?t help but think the main page is full of adverts! I count 5 if you include the massive one smack in the middle of the page for links to other parts of Neowin... I?m sure for a first time visitor this could be handy but as a regular I?m already finding it annoying.

The other thing is to me everything just seems to crammed together compared to the old main page and the forums. The new design doesn?t exactly make very good use of screen real-estate... only about half the screen is used on a 1680x1050 monitor where as on the forums almost all the screen can be used if I maximise my browser.

I?ve attached a screenshot to show some of my concerns, again I really do like the new layout in general, please what I say as constructive criticism and not someone just ha:)ng a moan :)

I think with a few tweaks the new layout will be amazing, keep up the good work!

Can't really complain about the actual adverts, as they're required to keep the site running so there's not much you can do about those. But I think the two Neowin ones are actually rather nice. I wouldn't really call those adverts per se.

I want you guys to understand why it is a fixed width site at the moment.

The content is no longer full stories, they are summaries. This is a design choice we made, the problem with it, is if the page is too wide, it will make the content look worse, and the site in general less attractive.

See the attachment for an example of what I mean. Take notice of the news logos, and other bits like that, your post goes from 4-5 lines to 1-2.

The fixed width on the main page is fine with me. It is the same as The Shift theme in the forum. I would like to see a full screen width on a skin for the forum :)

I agree, the content looks better on a set-width format.

Was more columns to break up the content that scaled with wider screens ever considered?

I'm guessing there's no way to go back to the old layout? I really can't stand this new design. It's too cluttered and tries to shove too much information in your face at once.

I kind of like that over the current one

But wouldn't it look better from the previous 50%, to around 70-75% width? Maybe it is just my resolution 1680 x 1050. Looks really weird on a wide screen.

The site looks 100% better at 1024 x 768

I totally "Wow!" this new Neowin theme. DAM! I mean wow... nice design! I love it! I don't know why other people complaint about the wider screen mode. I don't full screen my browser as it looks like it's breaking the page. I love my web page to look like a paper size mode. Timan, when I first see this new design, my impression was that I would pay you lots of dough to make a site of my own have this feel and looks. I LOVE THIS!

OH yeah... I love the "table-less" or "none-table" design. Fully DIVs and CSS controlled is what a web site should be.

A hundred dittos. It's been a while since I've logged in through the front page (I use the WL Messenger alerts mostly), and I was really impressed. Come a long way since '03!

Who was we, and what was the logic behind it? Seems you have a full revolt on hand. I'm just keep coming around for the forums, but unless the front page goes to something remotely resembling the old shift, I'm finding a new tech news site.
