Chsoriano
Wow... I thought this was a joke. 1. If you really must save your executables, at least organize them into at least 1 folder, and further if possible. 2. Do you really need shortcuts to all of those apps on your desktop? What's wrong with the start menu? If you see a shortcut on your desktop... and can't remember the last time you clicked it... DELETE IT.
Kami-
wow... only "icons" on my desktop are on my app launcher bar... :x
Colin-uk Veteran Posted October 15, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 15, 2008 on my desktop I only have my computer, recycle bin, my documents and a link to my downloads folder. all apps are in my start menu. apps that I only open when using a file to open or apps I can start from my run box aren't in there at all. I have a screenshot somewhere lol. I have my apps categorised. also I reshacked my start menu to take out the useless crap like help & support and recent documents that I never use lol

Deisel Weisel
1. If you really must save your executables, at least organize them into at least 1 folder, and further if possible. I don?t know what I ?must save?, that?s part of my problem. Where should I locate the one folder? I?ve always suffered a bit of phobia when it came to the whole file network thing, so when there was the option, I?d always save to the desktop instead, where I knew it could be found. Executables are those ending .exe? I tried deleting those and it kept saying something like: ?If you delete this, the program won?t run? 2. Do you really need shortcuts to all of those apps on your desktop? What's wrong with the start menu? That?s the whole point. I want to be able to start them from the start menu, but as my list shows, only 10 (the bolded ones) are duplicated in the start menu. So it?s safe to delete those desktop icons for those 10? But how do I get the others (those not bolded) into the start menu? If you see a shortcut on your desktop... and can't remember the last time you clicked it... DELETE IT.[/quot:cool:/>Okay  use a dock.. I use a dock and have 0 icons on my desktop because of it. Just looked on Wiki to find what a 'Dock' is. I'm running NT4 if that's a factor. I'll look into that. Thanks.
capr
My Computer Network Neighborhood Inbox delete Ad-Aware SE Personal Adobe Reader 6.0 delete AVG 7.5 Outlook DivX Converter delete DivX Movies DivX Player delete HP DeskJet 720C Series delete Java Web Start delete Microsoft Mouse delete Microsoft Outlook delete Free Download Manager delete Mouse Quick Start Guide delete Mozilla Firefox VLC Media Player delete Windows Media Player delete WinZip delete My Briefcase delete iv_misc delete IrfanView Thumbnails delete Internet Explorer fdminst-lite.exe delete FSS_PH60.exe delete install_flash_player_7_ax.exe delete irfanview_plugins_410_setup.exe delete iriview410_setup.exe delete mpfull.exe delete IrfanView delete msjavax86.exe delete NetworkOptimiser.exe QuickTimeInstaller.exe delete ShockWave_Installer_Full.exe delete spybotsd152.exe delete spybotsd160.exe delete Shortcut to Dial-Up Networking Spybot Search & Destroy delete ie6setup.exe delete these seem to be either not necessary or just setup files that were used once and you don't need anymore... as for some of the shortcuts like VLC player, I am pretty sure you just go to the movie you want to watch and double click it to watch it... if you don't, then start doing it. it's good for you to use the file explorer to locate things rather than open vlc and locate the files with it. anything that i haven't listed that you don't use, please feel free to delete them... also consider using a quick launch bar instead of having all this stuff on your desktop. right click on the taskbar go to toolbars and check quick launch. now you can drag those shortcut icons from your desktop onto the toolbar and run things from there. Lewism
You should create a Download folder to store all those .exe. You probably use these only once. You could also use a dock which is very convenient. If you want to type a bit Launchy. It launch programs, you open it and type the application you want to run. The more you use it, the better it will work. By default, it will search all the shortcut in the start menu.

cork1958
First off, go take a computer class so you will have a clue as to what you're doing with that computer. If you are unable to manage this simple task of managing your desktop, I'd hate to know how spyware/malware infested you either already are or very shortly will be!! Then, follow the advice already posted!!

Whether he found the exe again to install it is another question :p joke I tend not to save the executables for the programs I download. I don't see the point as they take up space I can use for other things, I can easily download them again, and by the time I need to do a reinstall, there is a new version out so the old installer is obsolete. trag3dy
use a dock.. I use a dock and have 0 icons on my desktop because of it. imo docks are mostly an aesthetic thing. If he's running 800x600 my guess is his system is not able to handle much more than that and adding a dock to the mix will only use up system resources he might not have. Or he just likes that resolution for some reason. If his computer was purchased in the last six years it should be able to handle a bigger screen size than that..
