new ubuntu kernel = panic mode

Recommended Posts

while i was gone my wife allowed an ubuntu update which installed the new 2.6.24-21 kernel. i went to restart and i noticed it wouldn't boot, i got a kernel panic. in the boot menu had the new kernel entry and my 2.6.24-19 one. i am only able to boot into the 19 kernel. i edited my menu lst. and made it default boot the earlier kernel with no problems. the question i have is, do i really need the new kernel or can i continue to use the 2.6.24-19 one ?

I would guess that it would be fine but in theory the newer one will have improvements and perhaps something else caused the problem. Just updated my new quad core Ubuntu PC and thank goodness had no problems! There was also a newer Nvidia driver as well, this always worries me more, but also went on without any glitches.

i was on the ubuntu forums and i found TONS of people who cannot boot with the new kernel. it is advised to skip this update and wait for a fix or the next kernel update.

Thanks for the update! I have then perhaps been lucky as I have four different Linux Boxes in my home office, from a 2.4 Celeron to a quad core and have had no problems! :)
