Thanks smooth3006, did what you said, ran the sudo apt-get update, but not sure how to get the updates? Used the Synaptic Pacage Manager but nothing there! Sorry if I am being stupid!

hmm....i used the deb openoffice package to install at ubuntu 8.04.1.

i had to use the terminal to do all the installation. here's another guide which i've found it useful too:

http://www.quicktweaks.com/2008/10/11/inst...inal-in-ubuntu/

i found that this is a very good and simple guide. :)

but at the first place you need to uninstall the previous version of openoffice before proceeding to installation of this new version.

i found a fix for it:

for people using ubuntu hardy

add this to your repos..

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu hardy main

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu hardy main

update it using sudo apt-get update

yeah. it should work with that, but i think that's not really necessary.

hmmm.... thats funny it should of worked.

follow this guide and read the first comment post

i actually followed all the instructions from the website i gave and i successfully installed it.

that's weird.

If you are using Intrepid Ibex, this worked fine for me:

Click on the Third Party Software tab and then click on the “+ Add” button. Cut and paste the following line into the box

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main

and then click on the “Add Source” button to save it. Repeat and add this line too:

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main

Make sure the two new lines have the checkbox ticked (see screenshot above) and then close the Software Sources application. You should then be asked to reload the package manager database:

To install software and updates from newly added or changed sources, you have to reload the information about available software.

Once I did this, the “Updates Available” star appear in the top panel of Gnome. Running the update manager showed me the updates available, e.g. OpenOffice.org, which it then downloaded (about 95Mb) and installed. It was as simple as that.

If for some reason the update manager star doesn’t appear then just open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
