Max Veteran Posted October 18, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 18, 2008 I'm after a Linux distro for a Cyrix 333Mhz/128MB RAM/4GB HDD (ugh, I know). I would normally turn straight to Ubuntu, but the minimum requirements are 256MB RAM. Its got to be really user friendly, as its for a novice user. Any ideas? tom01
Kubuntu No! Try Xubuntu! The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM.To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk. Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 192 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 256 MB RAM. http://www.xubuntu.org/ Thats IF you NEED to use a Ubuntu based distro! I would take a look here http://polishlinux.org/choose/linux-on-old-hardware/
Elv13
-Puppy linux (never tried but some ppl like it) -Damn small linux (will run fast, very fast, even on this computer, but can hardly be upgraded, if you dont like what come by default, then flush it). The download is 50mb and include over 100 applications. -Zenwalk XFCE -Fluxbuntu (even fater than Xubuntu. -Slitaz (even smaller)

markwolfe Veteran Posted October 18, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 18, 2008 Yeah try Xubuntu, but it may still be a little too heavy for you (it is very subjective, so one cannot state such things with certainty). I have used it satisfactorily on a 700MHz beast, but yours is half the CPU speed, maybe less RAM, too - I'm not certain what my old test box had. Fluxbuntu may be an option, or other *box type distro, like DSL and such.
roadgeek9
I have a PIII 550 and used to run Xubuntu on it, and it worked fine. BTW - If you are wondering why I uninstalled Linux, it was just because I couldn't get the computer to work as a print server, but nonetheless, from a workstation perspective, it worked pretty well. Damant
I've tried Puppy Linux, it was pretty nifty and seem to have all the basic functionalities one needs. http://www.puppylinux.org/wiki/hardware/general/minreq
REM2000
TinyPC which is based on PCLinux is pretty cool on older hardware.
roadgeek9
To tell you the truth, on 2nd thought, I am now using Debian Etch on my PIII 550, running GNOME - and, in my opinion, it works perfectly fine.
darren89
xubuntu may be a good option for you. since you are planning to use an ubuntu distro. :)
redvamp128
I would probably go for Puppy Linux 3.01 --- Though DSL linux would be a good option. And at work I run Puppy Linux 3.01 and DSL on a 233mhz PII with 128mb and it runs fine though-- do the following-- boot to live and create partitions and create a 600mb Linux Swap partition. Once I did this --It runs smooth--- The one at work has Win98/Puppy 3.01/DSL linux tri- boot. Though I would also download the following-- the "retro" version of puppy---

Behemoth
Basically any distro using the xfce desktop should run fine (it's built for older hardware) - xubuntu, as said earlier, may still be a little heavy. I would give Zenwalk or Wolvix a try. They both use the xfce desktop very well.
redvamp128
The one at work has a 10gig-- partitioned as follows-- 4gig Win98-- 3gig Puppy Linux-- 600mb Swap--- remainder is DSL linux
mitch00
DSL and Puppy are pretty nice, but I reccomend DeLi ( http://www.delilinux.org/ )
