Steven P. Administrators Posted October 19, 2008 Administrators Share Posted October 19, 2008 We have been thinking long and hard about the feedback we've received from Subscribers and I have decided to ask the coders to remove the square ad from the Main page and instead include a leaderboard ad at the bottom (like on comment pages). I really don't know if I am getting my message across correctly, but Neowin does cost quite a bit to run monthly, and ad revenue is pretty poor lately, simply because of the way we display ads. Decent advertising is non-existent because advertisers feel that we don't display the ads in prominent positions. For example, would you as a company executive spend $$$ to advertise on Neowin if your ad featured at the very bottom of our pages? That is our problem here, we aren't trying to rip anyone off, we are trying to deal with a situation.
stevember
Oh and for ad-blockers (being in same business) is in my opinion wrong almost like stealing. Your ISP don't pay any websites.... Thank-you Neowin.

White Cuban
as long as ads dont cut it here, ill always support neowin as a subscriber, (though i don't think neowin will ever have enough from ads and wont need help from its community, glad to help :p ) i don't use main page alot, but when it does, it was ennoying, i really really thank you for the update. You could always put ads in the RSS feed which google has now started doing...
White Cuban
like gnuman said, if it was anywhere but in middle of the MAIN content (even there it can be placed, but lawkashen lawkeshen lawkeyshen :/) it was just poorly, ill'ly placed, if it was better placed even higher in content, and it wasen't just a BLOCK, maybe people would mind less. :p
Starbuck84
Sometimes when browsing the web, certain ads are truly annoying, like those flashy ones. But here on neowin I found the ads to be "in place". They are noticeable, that's for sure, but they don't bother me at all. I find it wonderful that you even took the thought of placing them somewhere else, and I applaud to you. I only have one question though: do you get paid extra if I click the ads? Because from time to time I click the ads with the thought that will generate sometime extra cash for you guys. :)
gnuman
Atleast NeoBond didn't put Google's annoying YouTube ads ;) although running intellitxt in the forums would help but I don't see many "useful/interesting ads" Although Amazon's would be nice but the problem with Amazon is people have to buy things in order to make money. gnuman
There would be more money but then there is the issue of click fraud as well. If for example Neowin get 100 clicks a day then all of a sudden he gets 1000, google might look into it as there might be click fraud going on and that would cause a bigger issue than anything else. Google pays per thousand views so if he gets say $1/ecpm and there are 10000 views he would get $10 although CPM does vary on what is being shown on keywords... I'll tell you one thing Linux keywords pay crap :D
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted October 19, 2008 Global Moderator Share Posted October 19, 2008 I was never really bothered with it, but having another "perk" as a subscriber is greatly appreciated! Also a good way to bring in revenue for the web site (Y)
Starbuck84
I thought that Neowin would get paued averytime someonw clicks the ad :/ I can be so wrong on this one, so don't pin me please. But I thought when a user (like me) visits Neowin and the ads are displayed, neowin would get some money. But if someone (a user) clicks an ad they would get a little "bonus"? Again, I have no idea how this stuff works, but if neowin only gets money from people clicking the ads, I'd better start clicking more then. Someone care to clarify this one? Thanks. +Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted October 19, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted October 19, 2008 Never had a problem with ads, seeing as I used to naturally just look at the top-left and see the forum posts. Don't see this anymore :(
Maximum Error
Neobond - Is there anyway for us to donate to Neowin - have you considered increasing the sub price? perhaps have one level of subscription then another layer that has the ad moved but costs more. Obviously the ads should not be abused. I would think most of the ads would be interesting enough to click on, since they are tech related

Just would hate if my ads clicked on just to monetize a website, if that was my intention I'd donate.
Mike
Revenue is only generated if someone clicks on the advertisement."A click a day, keeps the ads away" if that was the case, wouldn't it be better if those people who aren't going to click on the ads just blocked them? Less people seeing ads who aren't clicking on them would improve the click per view ratio which in the ad business means the money paid goes up (ie neowin would get more income). Seeing as you're somebody and i'm not, i'm sure you're correct (Y)

Like stevember said, we need to respect the advertisers, and not take advantage of them. The best thing you can do is subscribe or donate

Right now, if you really want to help, that is the absolute best way. Our writers are submitting almost everything they do to Digg after they submit it here, so all you really have to do is be logged into Digg and press the button on our site. :)
