what
Neobond - Is there anyway for us to donate to Neowin - have you considered increasing the sub price? perhaps have one level of subscription then another layer that has the ad moved but costs more. https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=636453

There was talk of higher levels a little while back I think that just got passed over for bigger things :)
Reacon
Now that the ads are out of the way (or will be), I would be glad to turn off my adblockers and help support the site. But you see, I have a bit of a problem. I use both adblock and a HOSTS file to ensure a ad-free browsing experience for both me and my mom who still uses IE7. I would not like to have to rename the hosts file and restart my browser every time I wish to support Neowin, so I have a question. Is there a way or a program to whitelist sites from my hosts file? Since linked ads come from different servers and domains than Neowin, I would think that it would be quite impossible, maybe you people can prove me wrong? An addon for Firefox would be very preferred if possible, I don't take to kindly to memory-hogging background processes.
C++
We have been thinking long and hard about the feedback we've received from Subscribers and I have decided to ask the coders to remove the square ad from the Main page and instead include a leaderboard ad at the bottom (like on comment pages).I really don't know if I am getting my message across correctly, but Neowin does cost quite a bit to run monthly, and ad revenue is pretty poor lately, simply because of the way we display ads. Decent advertising is non-existent because advertisers feel that we don't display the ads in prominent positions. For example, would you as a company executive spend $ to advertise on Neowin if your ad featured at the very bottom of our pages? That is our problem here, we aren't trying to rip anyone off, we are trying to deal with a situation. Maybe instead of thinking so hard, you should just look at what is starting you in the face? The solution has already been posted just a few pages into the very first "Welcome to Neowin 5" thread. It's prominent, it works for both subscribers and regular users, it doesn't get in the way of content, and you even get one more promotional cell than you are displaying now out of it. What is the problem?
Marshalus Veteran Posted October 20, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 20, 2008 I dunno, I've always thought the site looked a lot better with Ad Block turned off.

I was gonna point that out too, but I think he took that image from another source.
Shadrack
The ads that have designated spaces are perfectly a-ok for me. Its the adwords where my mouse hovers over them and an obtrusive window pops up that are really irritating.
Tech Star
I like it the way it is right now. I really do not see a need for change right now, the ad does not bother me and I don't even have an ad blocker. :p

If it was smack dab in the middle of the forum it would but on the main page it is fine.

bmdixon
I'm still getting the big square ad, and the one on the right hand side appearing as just a blue box. I've whitelisted neowin in adblock. It does the same in ie7 (Vista) without any plugins/addons. The top ad does show though. Any idea why?
Geoffrey B. Veteran Posted October 20, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 20, 2008 i honestly do not have any problem with the ads of this site. mostly because i know that they make neowin money and they simply do not bother me. im here for the content and no matter what ads they place i will still come. JMann Veteran Posted October 21, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 21, 2008 I think the design C++ showed would improve things for both markets personally, but to be honest I never noticed the Ad anyway and it needs to be there; and surely people by now understand why? If they were the one's paying for the running of Neowin every day they would be supporting the Ads a lot more. ;)
Joel
I don't get what all the hubbub is about. Go to many major tech-related site these days and you'll find a big square ad exactly where ours is. It's not like we broke an internet code by placing one there. Matrix XII
Yeah almost every major website has ads these days, but there is still the never ending debate about whether higher levels of subbing would be up for grabs, which I've said numerous times I'd pay over double the current price to subscribe to Neowin yearly for. I'd pay anything reasonable to keep this site going strong, I think it means a lot to many people.
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted October 25, 2008 Global Moderator Share Posted October 25, 2008 I would gladly pay double to keep neowin alive... with or without ads. Honestly, I spend more time on neowin then I do watching TV these days, and don't know where I would go without it. I only see now how financially stuck neowin is, with the server costs and how much effort is put in by the mods and developers into neowin, and all for free. Big thumbs up to everyone here (Y) (yes, even you too Joel)

I didn't realise that Neowin was trying to achieve a "the same as the rest" status. I agree with the idea a page back, ad is shown, and no news wrapped around it. Win win.
