DaDude
Ubuntu 8.04 couldn't run on IDE. It only worked with RAID. Will Ubuntu 8.10 work with IDE?

DaDude
 Ubuntu does not work in IDE? wtf Only 8.04 doesn't work. Older versions did. This is why I'm hoping 8.10 will work.

Are you sure about Ubuntu 8.04 not working on IDE drives? a) There are far too many IDE-only PCs for Ubuntu to ignore them. b) Linux is known to be compatible with a lot of hardware. Especially older hardware.

Especially older hardware. I'm 100% sure. This is why I can't have Ubuntu on my computer. I have Vista and it runs on IDE. I wanted to dual-boot between Ubuntu and Vista, but the IDE/RAID conflict was a problem.
FuLouZero
I had 8.04 installed on my dad's computer. He had an old eMachines that had an IDE drive installed. It ran fine.
ViperAFK
it works fine on ide drives... I have used 8.10 with an 80 gb wd ide drive. Your issue lies elsewhere.

markwolfe Veteran Posted October 20, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 20, 2008 I think that the problem was that the BIOS setting was set to one thing for a SATA RAID, if I remember correct. When the SATA mode was set to IDE, it couldn't run Ubuntu 8.04 but was able to run 7.10. I don't know why my "BIOS setting" would affect 8.04 but not 7.10. Fish
Did you file a bug in Launchpad? This issue is unlikely to get fixed unless the Ubuntu devs know about it. Did you try any other Distros to see if it is Ubuntu-specific?
ichi
There seems to be some bug in hardy with some IDE controllers not being properly detected and hence proper modules not loading. IIRC you'd have to add all_generic_ide to the kernel line (press 'e' on the grub screen). Once you've managed to boot, add that in the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst so you don't have to repeat the previous step on every boot. I had a similar problem with feisty, and back then the offending module was piix. Then again maybe that's not actually related with your problem, though. chaos_disorder
I've run 8.04 on several IDE drives.
markwolfe Veteran Posted October 23, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 23, 2008 (edited) Secondly, if you read the thread, you would see that it relates to how it operates with specific BIOS drive mode settings. Ubuntu worked fine one way, Vista the other. Edited October 23, 2008 by Aaron
Lechio
No problems running Ubuntu 8.10 with IDE devices here. Running it with those types of devices as we speak. Check the BIOS configurations like Mark said, problem should be there.
