fix-this!
i might be buying a wireless router soon maybe even one of those usb wifi adapters too for my hp laptop ? can you guys recommend any brand names that work "out of the box" with linux ubuntu 8.04 & 8.10 ? i know they usually come with some sort of software for windows. will it be hard to set up in linux ? also since i would be behind a hardware router firewall could i disable the ubuntu firewall or would that be not a safe idea ? ichi
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/...%20Manufacturer Some models work out of the box (conceptronic, edimax...), some need ndiswrapper to use the windows drivers and others lack WEP/WPA support or just don't work. Check the comments. The router's NAT is ok for blocking inbound connections. If you don't need to block outgoing traffic or doing something more complicated, and as long as you trust your LAN, it should be enough.

ichi
Yes, you don't need any driver for the router so it will work without problems. That's a community built list of usb devices, maybe there's some sort of official support list somewhere
