Mikeparkie
Can someone answer my question about scalable icons in Vista. How do they work? I set some folder icons and I can scale the folder size but then i get a box around the icon, where others will let me scale up to the image size. Can someone please what types of icons vista supports so i dont get this silly squares around my icons. Example of why i am confused thanks Edited October 21, 2008 by Mikeparkie
vlasta
I am not sure if I understand you correctly. On your screenshot, is the left image a folder with custom icon applied and the right image an .ico file? If this is so, do not wonder. .ico files and folders use different pieces of code (called "thumbnail extractors") to obtain the thumbnail. .ico file is considered an image and hence gets a border like for example .jpg files. The folder should actually scale well, check if your Vista is up to date and that your .ico file is correct - some icon tools do not save the different images inside an icon in correct order and this may cause OS to pick the wrong one. devHead
To get a truly large icon in Vista, it has to have a maximum size of 256 x 256 pixels. If it's not, or only up to 128 or smaller, you will see the box around it. There's a super good plug in for Paint.net that allows you to save PNGs or JPEGs as icons and does a very good job. Just make sure your original image is at least 256 x 256 (although 512 x 512 is also possible). Check the size of that icon, it's likely got a maximum size of 128 x 128 or perhaps even 48 x 48.
