[Official] Resident Evil 5

Recommended Posts

I completed RE5 last night. I really enjoyed the game from beginning to end and its one of those games that I want to play through again and theres plenty more to unlock too.

The only thing I will say is that Resident Evil seems to have lost its scaryness. I remember playing the first resident evil when it was all about conserving ammo because you where always expecting something bigger and badder around the corner and you would find yourself in situations where you wished you still had shotgun ammo left. With RE 5 that feeling wasn't really there because you knew that one of the enemys would drop ammo at some point.

Top game anyway though.

I sort of agree with how how the game has evolved though. In the first games the characters were new to the whole zombie thing, and in 4 and 5 they are agents highly trained to deal with such threats. Though that doesn't really excuse the lack of scariness.

I suppose scariness is inversely proportional to how many shotgun shells you have.

Well my review is up now, please read and let me know what you think.

Review

Good short punchy review.

However IMO this I disagree with

any fans of Resident Evil 4 will feel right at home with this

I didn't have to cater for a terminally ill retard in RE4 :p

You even kind of contradicted that statement with

The AI when playing in single-player is shocking, players will often find themselves wanting to turn the game off because of this.
The other alternative to this is to play the game only in co-op, because this mode is what Resident Evil 5 was made for.

I don't think it's a bad game either, but I'll await my true SP experience in RE6 please capcom ;)

If only they didn't have us micromanaging two bloody inventories it would have made things less of a pain in the ass. Passive AI characters like other games that you don't really need to pay any attention to or babysit.

Last time I played I focused on spotting the image splitting during cutscenes. I hadn't notied them before but ew, there was many of them, ranging from the top of the screen to the centre. Oh well :p

You mean screen tearing? Already mentioned this! You have put your 360 in a res of 720p or less, it is not designed for anything higher otherwise you get bad screen tearing in both game and cut scenes. I was playing in 1080p and changed to 720p and I now do not get any problems. It is fairly common for Capcom games as it happens in Dead Rising and Lost Planet as well :(

Shame as the game on the box said it supports 720p/1080i/1080p, maybe they should change that or patch it lol.

Yeah it is a shame. It really should not have even occurred in the final game but it has. It just makes you wonder how it even did. It is quite an obvious problem but I guess Capcom only tested the game in 720p or below which is pretty poor.

Capcom may fix it with a patch but they have not made any announcements of acknowledging the problem so I doubt they will.

I also noticed that on the box, that is so stupid that they put all those on the box when it clearly is not optimised for 1080i or 1080p or any other resolution above 1280x720 for that matter.

Oh well, I am still enjoying the game though.

I was hoping Chris and Leon would finally interact with each other before the series was over...oh well. I wonder if the next RE will have a completely new plot/characters or what.

See this is what I don't get..When people complain about KZ2 and it not being the same as other games, the popular example used is CoD, they are told to stfu, don't play the game etc etc.

Yet, Resident Evil a franchise long established, one which has been revolutionizing and defining the genre it created, and people want it to be more like a copy cat game which actually sucked after a few hours of tedious gameplay.

Yeah no thanks (N)

KZ2 has a different aiming scheme, but aside from that is pretty much pretty generic FPS #1423423.

Co-Op completely changes the history of like SIX or so previous Resident Evil games. That is why people are making more of a meal of this. It's always been a SP experience until now, where you really gotta play it Co-Op for the best experience.

Chucking in Co-Op ain't revolutionizing anything, I can name action games that have done Co-Op before than RE5, and argubaly even better (due to lame ass no moving/aiming), Gears of War for one.

Not a great comparison.

RE has had co-op before. This isn't the first MP experience for the series (Y)

Also, I wasn't talking about RE5 revolutionizing the genre alone, I said the RE franchise (Y)

First forced Co-Op then :p

And while I think it's good for Capcom to be trying new things, do it as an expanded/separate campaign, like say in Resistance 2, or Silent Hill 2 where you play as Maria for a couple of hours.

Well, they can do whatever they want, but the gamers will feedback their thoughts and as I said above it's of no surprise there's unease after the series has been mainly a SP experience for years. And the shift to complete action is also backwards with things like no moving whilst aiming, something that could have made things much easier when trying to micromanage 2 in-game inventories (you can't pause any more to do it) and keep Shiva from arsing up.

That's what they did ;) The very last hours of Racoon City were co-op/MP games.

Tsk, do your RE homework Gavin :p

Well put it this way RE4 > RE5 in Gavin's opinion in terms of a SP action game/experience :p

The older RE games are still survival horror bliss, but Capcom wizzed away those roots for better or worse.

I'll await RE6 in anticipation as I do for all RE titles, but RE5 was not what I wanted it to be. Still a solid 8 or 7 if you want me to rate it, it's faaaar from a bad game, just one with some flawed design decisions that annoyed me.

Co-Op is fun, I'd just rather play it in something else as I'm quite defensive of the awesome SP experience I've had in RE over the years.

Has anyone unlocked proffesional yet? If so send me an invite on chapter 1-2 so I can unlock it. I really can't be arsed to play through on veteran and proffesional!

Thanks

Got a (maybe) dumb question: I'm in chapter 6-1 at the moment. Let's say I want to play chapter 3 again, if I choose it from the chapter selection can I still continue my game from 6-1 afterwards? And do I play the 3rd chapter with all my stuff I have from 6-1?

Yes you can, and yes you will have all of your stuff. When you want to go back to Chapter 6-1, you will have to replay from the start of chapter 6-1 by selecting it in the chapter select screen.

Alright, tried it myself yesterday, it's the way you said.

Finished the game right now, have to say the last chapter is the toughest. Great game overall, really enjoyed it. Now pimping out all weapons and maybe hunting some trophies.
